Framework Laptop 13 - 12th Gen Intel Core BIOS 3.18 Release STABLE

I would definitely escalate. If you have the original email and the links pull in the wrong artifacts, I would press them.

I did the Retimer-Updates with 3.17. So I do not need to do them again with 3.18, right?!

Whats the current plan to get the 400MHz issue finally fixed? What are the next planned steps or how should I continue/help (can I?) solving this issue? After years of suffering I finally want to have a fully functional device (without purchasing the most expensive part of it new).

update from 3.17 without issues. Noticed fans boosting frequently at a loud volume under 3.17, this issue seems completely resolved with 3.18. Thanks a lot for the continued work on the BIOS!

II have just successfully updated to 3.18 with the Windows exe. Dual boot machine with Win11 24H2 and Debian Trixie. Both with encryption.

I had already done the two retimer updates with 3.17. It’s correct that I don’t have to apply them again, right?

Is there a plan? May I kindly ask for an update here please?

Based on your description, it appears the high CPU temperature is causing the CPU to throttle.

We conducted several thermal tests and confirmed that the fan curve is managing heat effectively. Although we were unable to reproduce the issue on our systems, we believe it is still related to a thermal problem.

We’ve received similar reports from other customers in the past who were able to resolve the issue by cleaning the fan and applying new thermal paste. We recommend you try these same steps and then monitor your system to see if the problem persists.

Thank you for the suggestion but unfortunately that is very unlikely my root cause. I replaced the paste once and after that didn’t work, I even switched to Thermal Grizzly PTM which didn’t solve the issue as well. After years of suffering from this I believe I have tried pretty much every option, which is why I’m dependent on an update that finally resolves this for me. Maybe you have any other ideas?

My 12th Gen board is now ewaste after a hardware failure during another attempt to upgrade standalone from 3.06. It’s unclear whether the upgrade contributed to the failure.

Support immediately put me into the ā€œsend photos of the front and back of the mainboardā€ response to my initial request, which already included photos and video of the front and back of the mainboard. So that’s a wrap on trying to figure out if a standalone 3.06 upgrade is possible.

Did you resend them the pictures and video anyway?

Updated from 3.06 to 3.18 on Windows. Initially had a black screen after the first reboot from the .exe. Had to force shutdown and right at power up, it started the update process.

The BIOS guide that is pinned to the top of the forum should also be updated, it is still showing 3.17 as the latest version for 12th gen.

Hi, I have a question: My Laptop is running under Linux (LUKS encrypted) with the original BIOS 3.04 and I would like to update it. Can I do it in two steps?

  1. Use LVFS method to update to 3.18 without updating CSME firmware
  2. and after that use EFI method to update CSME?

BR,
Uli.

I did recently read the ā€œAbandoned by Frameworkā€ topic, and while I don’t think I’m that perturbed, I did want to confirm that this BIOS update would work for my original board, which was a 12th gen intel (seems to me to be obviously correct but I’ve made dumber mistakes before), as I’m planning to sell my recently purchased Ryzen AI board.

This topic is for the framework 13, 12th gen intel yes. If you want to be extra sure you can screenshot your cpu info as displayed by for example windows device manager and someone could tell you your right or if its a different gen. A screenshot of the exact order could also confirm it for you.

Also your bios should tell you what generation Intel you got, and which bios you should use can then be confirmed based on that. If you got windows installed, follow that update path. If you plan on reselling, having windows preinstalled might be easier to sell, even if its an unregistered version.

I’ve had already once the mainboard replaced due to the infamous 400mhz bug, recently took the risk to upgrade again the bios and it seems like it’s back. I only hit it once and took like a good 2-3 minutes for it to recover. Annoying and unfortunate that my laptop is now out of warranty so I can’t complain to support anymore

I managed to get around the 400 MHz sh*t using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (on Windows), I know, I gave up a little bit performance for this … but what else could I do …

I’m using these settings:

  • PL1 Limit: 22W
  • PL1 Time: 7 seconds
  • PL2 Limit: 50W

Chief, idk how to tell you this, but you really are obsessed if you keep making new accounts to rant about this. Sell your FW and move on like I did. I hang around for the community and to keep apprised of what FW does in case they improve. Threatening legal action isn’t going to win friends and frankly, you don’t even know if you have a case. Just sell the laptop in as-is condition. You have no obligation to inform buyers of Framework’s firmware bugs. Someone will purchase it I assure you.

I’d be kinda fine with that if we were actually given all the tools to deal with it
