How does Framework make expansion cards for this laptop and make the motherboard compatible with future releases?

Framework’s laptop is utterly insane, with hot-swappable ports. The question is how did they get that to work from an engineering perspective? I am an engineer myself and am curious to see how they did it with this laptop.

The expansion cards just use USB Type C connectors, running fully featured USB with display and PD input on all ports (except on AMD).

Just the same way any other USB-C passive dock works - but just with a single port. USB-C has alt modes for display connectors.

Hi @Jason_Luculence

Welcome to the forum.

Being an engineer I’m surprised you didn’t look at the repair guides which show the motherboard, which is replaceable and how they have the USB C (Thunderbolt) ports 4 in the case of Intel on the 13"
