I like the function of framework13 but 13 is too small for daily usage
Basically if you can build a framework 15 with the same design of framework13 but bigger screen and model it will be great to me. I really love the design of 13 it’s just the screen is too small
And cpu I like to have the lunar lake one for long lasting power management. I don’t care too much for gpu since we will connect the remote machine anyway
If I won’t be buying a new laptop for a while, I want to really love it. However, I just don’t like the design of the chassis. I wish there was a matte black option, or any other colour really.
And yeah, I wish the AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 version would last at least around 15-16h on battery. Guess you can’t have it all
Thanks for taking the time to reply! Yes, mainly the colour (I just don’t like the classic aluminium look), but also the overall design. I prefer those edgy looking laptops with the same thickness all around (more like the FW12, maybe even a bit sharper corners).
The bezels are a bit too wide for my taste, but I get that they have to be somewhat sturdy and replacable.
I would like the FW13 to look a bit more modern, a bit more ‘designer’, but who knows what people will like in a few years
The huge amount of threads in the forums about charging/power issues, lack of FW/BIOS updates for things that have been reported for a long time? And on top of that, the new AMD CPUs just look like bad value proposition? Willing to be corrected, if that impression is incorrect. Looking at the older generation AMD CPUs, you cant get them with Gen2 keyboard? To be fair, seems like intel versions have less issues, at least thats my impression.
Wish they would focus on fixing the issues they have, before investing time and resources in launching new products…
I’m looking forward to getting a desktop, but my preferred distro is Debian (stable) and I don’t want to be the first person (or even in the first batch of people) to buy one and use it with Debian.
I desperately needed a new 16" laptop just half a year before the framework 16 was available, so now i still have a fairly new big thinkpad.
Once that is at the end of its lifetime for my usecase, i might get a framework.
The trouble is, my last thinkpad was good for about 12 years, even then I only retired it to backup-computer because I needed something faster for some CAD work. (The prices and availability for (used) spare parts for thinkpads are a dream.)
So if my new thinkpad lasts as long, it’ll be another 10 years before my first framework. Also then I’m wondering, to make a framework financially worthwile, the screen/chassis/keyboard would need to last about 20 years. Hard to tell how it’ll be.
Though the framework would give me the option of upgrading more often, and continually have up to date hardware. Though that als means I would spend more resources because I got a framework then I would without. Which is somewhat against frameworks mission. This is a difficult dilemma …
With the older AMD board, the Gen2 keyboard works, it just isn’t packaged with it as a bundle at purchase of a full laptop. It’s a little frustrating, but they’re keeping the Gen1 KB in stock mainly for replacements etc, and fully phasing it out in favor of the new one. There isn’t much of a deal here, just that this transition time means the last-gen hardware isn’t physically packaged with the new offerings right now and they are still selling through the old bundles. If you want though, the Gen2 DOES WORK and you can purchase it separately if you’re still going for the older AMD boards (mine is great!)
From my experience, both AMD and Intel boards are great. I have the Ryzen 7 7840U board and the Intel 12th gen i7. My old Intel board has 4 ports that it can charge from, whereas the first AMD board lineup only had 2 (the two rear ones). It’s not that big of a deal since i always preferred my charging port on the rear anyway so the front ports were easier to grab at for peripherals or drives. The intel board currently is running my server stuff in a Coolermaster board chassis, just fine. AMD is my main laptop.
I agree. Desktop was a cool proof of concept specifically for that CPU architecture because it wasn’t ever going to get the performance it was designed to with the power and cooling tech we currently have in laptops, so a desktop is a fun project. But Framework focusing on really honing in on their 12, 13, and 16 products needs to be a main focus. They only JUST released a new GPU option for the 16, after two years. I totally understand that they are a very small company ramping up production, but stretching too thin on multiple products at this stage is a lot to juggle without growing more, imo. I think some ideas could be tabled for later and focusing on bettering their products would be nice.
I think a black option would be great, or even all white (I’m biased, my entire main PC setup and electronic device suite is all white right now) but dbrand makes some good skins for the 13 (i haven’t applied mine yet but will soon)
Honestly, for Thinkpad owners, this is a concern for adoption. But tbh, I’d look into selling it when you get bored of it and pushing for a Framework. It’s a joy to work with and play with, and the 3:2 aspect ratio makes it rather nice for workflows even on a smaller screen. I can’t go back at this form size.
My 7840U one can charge from all ports, are you sure you aren’t mixing this up with usb4? Only the 2 back ports are usb 4 but all of them can charge.
Once they figure out how to make plastic cases that don’t crack I would love if they made a plastic case for the 13 which can be whatever color you’d want. Untill then a skin gets you quite close. The dbrand swam skin on my 13 looks really nice.
Ah, yes I am! Thank you for catching that. It’s been a sec and the file cabinet in my brain on Framework hardware details I’ll never use got filed away confusingly. Thanks lol
I preordered a 2nd gen Framework 16. Then I found this thread. In hindsight I waited to buy one even though I loved that the Framework 16 had an AMD cpu. I was drawn by the repairability and linux support, but my previous laptop was just barely good enough to keep me from ordering one.
With the 2nd gen Framework 16 I saw the nvidia dGPU as well as an updated AMD dGPU. That reassurance of ongoing updates, plus the open source EC firmware, and the way Framework works well with its community - it’s enough to get me to order one early, and retire my old laptop.
I really like Framework 13, especially now, after years of constant updates (AMD CPUs, 2.8K display, bigger battery, new webcam, etc.), but currently I can’t push myself to buy one because of the price and me using primarily the desktop computer. As for the laptop, I have an older ThinkPad T470p in full configuration, and while it’s still powerful enough for me on the go, it’s size and weight especially is definitely something, which is getting old real fast and is one of the main reason, why I want buy Framework in the future (either when the performance won’t be enough or when the battery stop being usable).
Hi, Im thinking of getting laptop 13 for sometime already and right now Im not sure what to do.
I can either get 7040 with R5 or wait for the next gen next year (not sure if it will even exist).
If it will exist then current AI version will get cheaper to level of 7040 or I will spend a bit more and get the next gen. I know there is no big performance difference between 7040 and AI but still it could be a bit better for the same price + we are already at september so it will be probably half a year.
Oh and also there is only R5 available so that’s a bummer
