Input module substructure

I’m a hobbyist leather worker, and had this idea for an input module spacer just for aesthetics, and made a partial prototype:

My current plan is to glue on top, but that seems like it’d be too much thickness for lid closure without contact. I could get thinner leather, but then it’d be less robust to wear and tear.

But it also seems silly to buy a spacer just to rip the plastic off — and it might be necessary on the head side as magnets are only on the bottom side. Is there any availability for a thinner substructure of input modules?

I recall you being able to get 3D models and print it yourself. i could be wrong though.

The closest would probably be picking up a Color Shift Spacer and taking the Color Shift part of it off. You could also try doing a PCB like this: InputModules/Electrical/MinimalSmallInputModule at main · FrameworkComputer/InputModules · GitHub

Welcome to the community @Berdandy!

The natural leather look is a nice touch. @Joseph_Schroedl has made RGB LED matrix modules and I think he printed the sub structure on a 3D printer for his prototypes.

You could have some made (there are people online that will 3D print things for you) that is just the base parts. The master CAD files are available in the GitHub repository for makers. If you are happy with the results you could even sell a few to others on here. Heck someone might even pay extra to have it monogrammed!

Good quality leather is so much better than the cheap stuff that is pushed all the time on Amazon and even now on Etsy to some extent. Nice idea!
