Does the AMD processor has NPU? Looking to use windows recall feature.
Not at the moment. The Framework 16 uses Ryzen 7000 Series chips.
Both the 7840HS and 7940HS have a 10TOPS NPU, but it is way below the threshold for Copilot+ (40+ TOPS required). AMD also has not provided much software to integrate the NPU into any programs. I recall they are still working with Microsoft to get the NPU to even show up in Task Manager.
If you want a Copilot+ PC with recall, you will have to look for either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Series chips, Intel’s Lunar Lake (200 Series) chips, or AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 Series Chips.
Framework doesn’t really announce future plans for what chips they plan to use, so if you want a Framework that supports Copilot +, you can only wait.
Another possibility would be if Microsoft allows GPU TOPS to be used to perform AI operations. The 7700S and maybe even the 780M should be able to provide more than enough TOPS to run Copilot + / Recall.
Out of curiosity, are you concerned or familiar with the privacy/security threats recall presents?
I ask because I’m surprised to see someone not only willing, but actively looking, to utilize that feature. I ask this as a Data Scientist who works with AI daily. Not trying to attack your interest, I’m genuinely curious.
Thank you for such a detailed response.
