"L.D" – what is this SMD?

Hi!

In an attempt to repair a mainboard I did not give it the due loving care. The result: an SMD was decapped and its innards are a ruin. It is located on the backside, top left corner.

The board is version 1A, 2021-08-05. It is a replacement, I have no info re its batch.

My guess is, it ishas been a (ceramic?) oscillator, but a web search for "LD" or "L.D" found nothing relevant. I also tried several search sites for SMD markings ( https://smd.yooneed.one/ , https://2024.hotenda.com/marking-code/search/list/LD.html , https://www.web-bcs.com , http://markingcodes.com/search/c/ld , https://www.s-manuals.com/smd/ld ). The visually closest were some Pericom products ( https://www.diodes.com/assets/Frequency-Control.pdf ) but they bear no marking.

Please help, I am lost.

Looks like a crystal. And there are filter caps & resistors, which are usually attached to the lines between a crystal and the chip it feeds. Check the datasheet for the intel chip it’s attached to, to find the value it wants.

It seems, Intel does not make the specs public. All search results led to a page (and copies of it) that is rather stingy with information ( https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/211299/intel-jhl9040r-thunderbolt-4-retimer/specifications.html ). Intellectual property reasons, I guess.

A request like mine in their user forum had been referred to a general Thunderbolt site where one has to register as a developer (I’m not) and provide one’s development proposal (a consumer with mainboard repair? they’ll laugh me out of the internet!) Now I’ll go for the jugular and try to contact Intel directly.

Yeah, after I posted I realized, this being an intel chip meant that a datasheet may not be available to the public at all.

You could contact Framework support & see if someone there would be willing to dig into their board schematics for repair shops to find the value for you. Can’t say that sounds very likely, though. Failing them doing that, you could ask them for a list of repair shops that have applied to receive full board schematics. Then you could hit them up, offering a little money for their time in digging up the value for you. Framework has said that detailed mainboard schematics are available to repair shops, if they apply, and sign an NDA. I believe because the boards are developed with partner(s) who may not be as enlightened as Framework themselves about releasing full schematics of their work.
