Laptop screen freeze after a while when connecting external screen

Hi all,

System info:

  • Framework Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen 7040Series
  • AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840U w/ Radeon™ 780M Graphics × 16
  • Memory: 32,0 Gio
  • BIOS 03.16
  • Fedora Linux 42 (Workstation Edition)
  • Linux 6.16.12-200.fc42.x86_64

When connected to an external screen, after a while, the laptop screen freezes. The external screen keeps working. Only a hard reboot allows to unfreeze the screen.

The external screen has an integrated USB Hub, so it’s providing power, screen, ethernet connexion, keyboard and mouse through a single USB-C cable.

I though this was software related (Linux Fedora), but today, right after the hard reboot, I had no screen at all. No laptop one, no external one. I had to cycle multiple reboot presses. Each time, the laptop seemed to boot, but without image, same connecting or unconnecting the external screen. I then end up connecting a normal power plug for a while unplugging the external screen, and reboot, and finally I got image, so perhaps hardware related?

I don’t know where to even start looking.

Thanks for your help!

This hasn’t happened again for a few days. Crossing fingers. Don’t know why. Maybe a software update with Fedora?

Same problem on the 7640U version with Fedora Silverblue 42. The applications on the frozen display are responsive, e.g. I managed to pause and play video, it was also visible playing in the window switcher preview pane.

Then perhaps Fedora related. I’ve updated to Fedora 43 today, let see if the problem persists. It didn’t happened to me for 10 days, so perhaps it was software related after all, crossing fingers.

Aaaah it happened again. Despite the Fedora 43 update. Common point: it seems to always happen after a suspend. I’m working a little bit, and suddenly the laptop screen freezes.

So if you disable the screen saver/suspend after 5 minutes, then you don’t have the problem?

Ive just had the same thing you are experiencing happen to me twice, using a display port to connect to an external monitor.

Same here! running cachyos, seems to happen after first suspend. connected an external monitor and the laptop monitor seems to freeze.

Are you too on Fedora? Or another Linux distro? Or Windows? Would be great to pin out if it is a software or hardware problem.
