Low FPS in FFXIV

On Windows 11 with the Framework 13" AMD 7640u I’m only getting an average of about 11 fps in Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve put the BIOS in gaming mode so it has 4GB of vram now, and I’ve updated the drivers to the latest AMD software (Thought it may have just been the framework drivers having issues at first). I’ve also made sure the AMD software is running and that there are 48GB of RAM in dual channel. Windows is also set for gaming mode, and FFXIV is explicitly set to high performance.

I did some digging and I think the 760m iGPU should be able to run this no problem. It’s a fairly old game even factoring in the recent graphical update. Is there anything else that could be the issue here?

What resolution are you playing at? FFXIV would perform poorly at native resolution, both on the 2256x1504 display and the 2880x1920 display.

Logical Increments has a nice performance chart to help you understand the expected performance of FFXIV. The 760M is above the “Entry” tier but below the “Modest” tier.

So probably ~30 FPS would be expected at 1080p, and anything beyond that would be unplayable.

The performance I mentioned was at 1080p. I was able to get 25 after going down to 720p and dropping the settings to their minimum.

Is your windows power setting set to efficiency, balanced, or performance? Not for the game itself but for an overall profile. Are your thermals looking good as well? Not throttling at 100C or anything?

The overall profile is set to performance. It may be thermal throttling. The GPU temps were getting up to 87 C under load.

I did some testing with prime95 and hardware monitor and figured out that the fan curve is kind of busted on this laptop. I compared it to another framework that was working correctly. On the good laptop, the fans start sooner and keep the temps under 95C and between 33-35W. On mine, the fans didn’t start until I was already at 101C and thermal throttled to 28W before the fans fully ramped up.

I think I need to adjust the fan curve, but idk how to do that on these. I should probably redo the thermal paste too just to be safe.

I’m not sure if the fan-curve is something that is exposed by the EC tool that is floating around for Frameworks (for this chipset). Re-pasting is a good first step alongside ensuring that the fan is clean and clear.

If re-pasting with a quality paste or one of the genuine PTM pads does not adjust things into your favor, I’d reach out to support to see if something can be done about the fan curve for your unit or if it necessitates a replacement (Bouncing off your note of another framework exhibiting different behavior).

Another decent “test” Might be to check out the gamework thread, and see if you’re getting similar FPS from the same games expressed there from the same model. It might be a case where this particular game is just unexpectedly hard on the hardware available.

Edit: spelling
