So I replaced two servers at home this weekend with a 1240p main board. The two old servers were a SuperMicro E200-8D and a Intel Skull Canyon. The former was running the bulk of the containers, and the latter was running the containers that needed the ability to transcode video and was functioning as a NAS, connected to a Thunderbolt DAS.
The 1240P board was roughly equivalent to both old machines combined in Geekbench, so I figured might as well get started. Installed Ubuntu server, connected the DAS and got ZFS online, copied the containers over, and changed the local dns entries to the new server.
Been a few days now, and this this is working like a champ. Running 49 containers and supporting a 4 drive, 54 TB RaidZ1 “NAS”.
I’m planning on doing the same thing. I already 3d printed the case, and I am just waiting on some expansion cards. Basically, I don’t think I’ll have any problems, but I am worried about sustained loads and temps. Something I’ll be keeping an eye on.
