Fair enough. Ill try making a model from scratch, i gotta get calipers tho.
How accurate are their STL files? If they are reasonable close modeling from an STL isn’t too hard, if they are not all the little slots and tabs for cable routing will be a nightmare
The mesh should be pretty accurate. The problem is there will be no differentiation between the different parts. If we are going to just take the mesh and go through and fix the model. How much harder is a from scratch model. Especially if we are excluding the extra foam pads.
Hello I just got word on this:
@Joseph_Schroedl Now it would be possible to make a new top part right? Assuming there is a way to source the magnets required?
for wire routing the length of the wire is probably more important as at least from my point of view, the routing would need to change to acomodate the new screen. The magnet locations are a bummer… I still do have my calipers though so theres always that way
just wanted to let yall know ive been and will continue to keep an eye on this thread, i would be more than interested in a upgraded display for the fw16
I too would be interested in a mini-LED screen for the Framework Laptop 16.
Has anyone made any progress on this?
Using this screen on the Framework Laptop 16 would require designing and making a fully custom top cover since the mini LED screen is physically larger than Framework’s custom panel.
This is doable with a lot of reverse engineering to get all the details of the lid translated into 3D CAD. Framework’s CAD files for the Framework Laptop 16 lack all details of the laptop. The files provided are just rough shapes and dimensions of the exterior of the laptop. None of the intricate details like magnet slots and locating groves are modeled. All of those features would need to be measured by hand on the laptop.
Hi,
Have you tried contacting FW and asked for the drawings you need. They might give you them.
I also see this type of thread quite interesting. What if, with slightly more depth to the top panel and some space for connector pinout adapters, one could potentially plug in any old display panel.
For example, I have an old broken laptop. Could I take a FW main board, FW bottom cover and this top cover. Take the old screen from the old broken laptop and have a working laptop again?
i’m pretty sure they didn’t release incomplete casing models by accident, given they’re fairly consistent about some of these things. i’m not sure what business pressures exist to prevent them from giving us more complete data, but there is undoubtedly something in the way.
I suggested to contact FW support as I saw a FW video where they suggested that more info was available if people asked. What is out there was just to see what interest there was.
Do you happen to have a link to that video?
Any updates on getting this to work nicely? I know there’s a physical limitation on fitting it due to the miniled panel being thicker, but what about getting the display connector working? I
If we disregard thickness of the display lid for a bit, I wonder, would this adapter work to adapt the 0.4mm pitch Framework eDP cable to the 0.5 pitch connector on the display panel?
