Overheating Framework Laptop 13 DIY Edition

(Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 1) System: Ultra 7 155H.
When I’m on YouTube, the temperatures are getting to 97C, while everyday use is about 46C. Do you have any ideas on how I could reduce the temperatures? Would thermal past help, and if so, where do I apply it? Are there other cooling fan options?

Windows or Linux?

Windows

I don’t use windows so I don’t have specifics for what to do, but I wanted to point out that something is definitely wrong. It is not normal to hit 97℃. I’ve had youtube going all day and I’m currently at 45℃. I don’t think I even hit 90℃ when running games.

As for investigating the problem, I’d check:

Hardware issues:

  • Is your fan spinning? The only time I’ve ever hit 97℃ was when my laptop’s fan was not spinning.
  • Is your laptop case hot? It should be if your CPU is hitting 97℃. If there is a poor connection between the CPU and the heatsink then the CPU could heat up and fail to transfer that heat to the heatsink and laptop case. Last time my laptop hit 97℃, it would have burned me if I touched the laptop for more than a second or two. If your case isn’t hot when your CPU is 97℃ then this could possibly be remedied with paste and re-seating the heatsink.

Software

  • Make sure you have hardware accelerated video decoding working. That’ll significantly reduce power consumption and therefore heat when watching videos. Even so, software decoding wouldn’t be enough to get your laptop to 97℃ unless you’re watching very high resolution videos.
