Hey all, I’ve been lurking for a few weeks reading what kind of customization people have done to their frameworks and found only a couple posts about powder coating. I’m hoping to use this project as a way to learn powder coating. My concerns are with the plastic and magnets on the bottom chassis and input cover. My question is, can the plastic parts/magnets withstand 350F (176C)? I’m assuming they’d be OK since it’s they’re only in the oven for about 20min, but just want some guidance.
Welcome to the forum.
The magnets, nope. They should be standard neodymium. wikipedia.org/wiki/Neodymium_magnet#Temperature_sensitivity
You’ll need to extract them. Which top cover / lid do you have? You could buy a large neodymium magnet, and then you may be able to just pull them out. If you do, do not underestimate large neodymium magnets, and do not ever play with them. Depending on size / strength, they can and will destroy fingers if caught and crushed.
I don’t know which plastic is used where, but ABS or ABS blends are commonly used in a lot of consumer products. I’d just presume the plastic won’t properly survive the heat either.
That sucks. I’ve got the framework 13 bottom chassis/input cover. I may just sacrifice it anyways and see what happens, maybe use some low-temp powders. Not a huge deal to me since it was part of the mystery box set, but I’ll also try regular spray paint with a protective layer.
