Previewing the Framework Wireless Touchpad Keyboard

Looks good, but pretty limited, although I’ll welcome the touchpad for zooming and horizontal scrolling.. At home I put my 16" in a stand next to my 4K 32" monitor and use a wireless mouse and a conventional keyboard that has a numpad and analog volume control but I get annoyed typing my password instead of using the fingerprint reader. It’d be brilliant if a fingerprint reader, touch-pad, numpad and analog volume controller and could be on the one device! For that setup size doesn’t matter.

The reason I always avoid wireless keyboard is the fact that I use them to type in passwords, and the encryption protocol is either known broken, or unknown presumed broken. For example, all of them reveal keypress timings, which is more than enough information. I hope that with the customizable firmware, this one will be different. What do we know about the wireless encryption at this time?

This won’t be different unless you implement it yourself and trying to hide them would murder battery life.

Continuously transmitting for like half a second after the last keypress would probably be enough. The issue is not that an eavesdropper can tell I’m if typing or not, but that you can tell how far the keys I’m pressing are from each other. I’d be happy to install custom firmware, but I’m not sure if even the firmware has this level of access, or it’s just a fancy key remapping thing.

It does, it’s completely open so just spam random garbage and mix in your actual keypresses to your hearts content. You probably need to send some harmless invalid scancodes for the random spam and you would make actual input latency worse but it would probably work.

Sounds a bit paranoid, I guess keypress timings could be used to recover passwords with detailed information about how you type etc., but it would require an appropriate radio receiver near you and knowing when exactly you enter passwords etc. and you’d probably need to capture tons of password entries to get enough statistical information.

But then there might be easier methods, like using a microphone to not only capture keypresses but also the sounds of individual keys, or just installing a hidden camera or a keylogger.

Then if you are paranoid, when entering your password you could also extend the time between key presses deliberately, to several seconds per press.

But it also begs the question, if you are that paranoid, get a PS2 or USB keyboard and run a cable across the floor. After all, who is really going to try and work out your password, or do you have a CIA or FBI van permanently parked outside your house?

Whatever your beliefs are about this user’s motivations, this is not the appropriate thread to discuss them.

If it is at all possible with ZMK to vary the RF noise, you can do it with this keyboard and receiver combo. You would need to do your own investigation. However, I will offer:

ZMK is an open source radio keyboard firmware. What you can accomplish by building it yourself it is not limited to fancy key remapping.

I wish Framework hadn’t announced it so early on just to leave us hanging for half a year. If it were another laptop, I would understand. But this is just a peripheral.
