[RESPONDED] Dmesg errors

@Matt_Hartley Is this something I should be concerned by?

Here’s the HTML I copied out of the terminal, which includes formatting that makes it easier to see the errors: dmesg framework ($3690565) · Snippets · GitLab

I was testing my HDMI, DisplayPort, and Ethernet adapters and the following showed up in dmesg:

Are your display cards working? Looks to me like your DP and HDMI expansion cards are repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting. I just noticed I’m getting some similar errors with my HDMI card but it seems to be staying connected, I don’t currently have a display on hand to test it with though so I’m not sure.

I was manually plugging and unplugging the cards during that test. I was swapping the three cards in and out of a single slot. The display cards worked fine, and the ethernet appeared to work - it showed up but I didn’t plug in a cable.

Interesting. Based on the errors, my best guess is that for some reason it takes a few tries for the USB-C port to properly switch to the alt mode for the display. Not sure why that is, but if you’re able to use the display just fine then it must be able to successfully switch over after a few attempts. Definitely something to look into more if you have external display problems, but if everything works fine it’s probably not something to worry about. Keep your eyes out for any problems with those cards though.

Agree with @Owen , please keep us updated if you noticed any weird behaviors with your display.

Logs can be really noisy. But, while we’re seeing ACK fails and “possible driver bug” errors, the logs are not indicating when it gets past this and is successful. My guess is that it’s expecting behavior differing from what it is seeing. But as other have pointed out, if things are working you’re fine.

Errors like these bundled with non-functional devices, this would then be part of a bug report. In this instance, it’s due to the removal and reinsertion of the said devices. So you’re fine.

Yeah, I didn’t report it to support since the cards work

As far as I can tell, all ethernet/DP/USB modules are functioning that have something plugged into them. I would feel better about ignoring these journal entries if they were priority 4-6 (warning, notice, info) and not flagged as priority 3 (error)… but no one here is too worried about them yet, so I guess that’s somewhat encouraging.

What I’d be interested to know is what these “con 3”/“con 4” entries map to… how can we figure that out? I understand that these are USB-C connections, and likely connect all the modules (I’m thinking ones we add plus those internal like wifi) to the system.

Is it possible that the con string/id completes the mapping to the full name? i.e.

cat /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon9/name && cat /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon1[013]/name

Assuming these are like root hubs or buses… how do we find our which of our devices/modules are connected to which? I tried running lsusb -t but saw no mention of these “parent devices/nodes”. i.e. buses went up to 8, ports went up to 5.

lsusb -vt                                                                                                                             ✔
