[RESPONDED] Issues Running Zorin OS 16.2 on 13th Gen Intel

I just got my machine and I’ve tried to install Zorin on it, for the most part, it works fine out of the box, that was until I realized that when I closed the lid the machine did not suspend. Hitting the power button would cause the OS to suspend, however, what I didn’t initially notice is that when I entered suspend this way the screen would still be lit despite displaying just a black screen.

I followed the generic Ubuntu guide from Framework as well as the guide for 12th gen machines from the developers of Zorin and these did not resolve the issues. In fact following these guides actually caused other issues:

Adding the following to grub to disable the ALS to enable the brightness keys
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash module_blacklist=hid_sensor_hub"
instead of affecting brightness seems to just disable the speakers.

I also tried using echo deep | sudo tee /sys/power/mem_sleep to attempt to force the screen off when the system suspends, this did, in fact, work to turn the screen off, but it also would not turn back on when the system would awaken, additionally, it seemed as though the system would wake up (without the screen) when I closed the lid in this scenario.

Hi @Christian_Goodridge , welcome to the forums :slight_smile:

can we try and check if there’s any notable errors on systemd?

journalctl -b -1 -p err

you’d have to restart after unsuccessful resume, right?

perhaps also whole logs coming from unsuccessful resume

journalctl -b -1

suspend/resume should look like this in logs. cheers

@Loell_Framework
Here are the logs that appear after starting the machine

I think you may have misunderstood my issue, so far nothing I’m doing has been able to suspend the device on lid close (lid open will unsuspen) I am only currently able to suspend via button press and doing so does not turn off the display it remains lit but blank, performing this task does not result in any new lines in the log file. The aforementioned case where it does not resume from suspend only occurs if I enable deep in mem_sleep

Here is the log after rebooting following a forced deep suspend

Oh sorry, ok gotcha

what’s the kernel version of Zorin 16.2 by the way?

also is it using i915 module for the display? lsmod | grep i915

@Loell_Framework the kernel version is 5.15.0-73-generic, the grep command produces the following

That’s a really old kernel, especially for brand new hardware. I’m not familiar with Zorin OS but is there any way for you to update to something closer to mainline?

@Morpheus636 Thanks for the tip, I’ve upgraded to kernel to 6.2.16-060216-generic and this has fixed the screen not turning off on suspend as well as the brightness buttons now work. Closing the lid, however, still does not seem to initiate a suspension, fractional scaling (which previously just rounded up) now results in the screen simply freezing until the timeout resets it to the previous selection, though I don’t see this as a deal breaker for me.

Not sure if I just was closing it too slowly before but it’s suspending now, great news!

Can you confirm which issues are still occurring?

I believe the only thing not working is fractional scaling, though I’ve been told that’s a crapshoot in Linux in general

What WM and DE?

Hi @Christian_Goodridge,

Delighted to read your making progress here. Just a reminder that while we want users to run and enjoy the distros our their choosing, based on Ubuntu 22.04 does not mean it is going absolutely react like Ubuntu 22.04 - using our official guide, we have Ubuntu 22.04 humming right along.

That said, I hope you’re able to find success with your distro of choice and am delighted to hear that it sounds like you have suspend working! :slight_smile:
