[Solved! + Issue Found?] FW16 Garuda Linux doesn't recognize 7700S

Hello. I’ve just had a fresh install of Garuda Linux (240428) (which is based on Arch) on My FW16 with Bios 3.03.
I’ve noticed that The 7700S has a driver installed (cause its the same as the iGPU) but is not recognized. I’ve installed GOverlay and Mangohud, and even reinstalled the linux-video, and that worked for like, one session only. So I’m quite confused…

Pre-Reinstall, I had Garuda installed BEFORE the 3.03 bios update, and did said bios update in said install, and it worked mostly fine (primarily, ALVR+SteamVR now had issues) so now that I’ve freshly installed this OS, I’m at a loss…

Some logs~

Simple Tests I’ve installed vkdevicechooser which is a utility that lets you specify which GPU you want to use on a program. It’s similar to DRI_PRIME

ENABLE_DEVICE_CHOOSER_LAYER=1 VULKAN_DEVICE_INDEX=0 vkcube

Using Vulkan device index 0
Using Vulkan device index 0
Selected GPU 0: AMD Radeon 780M (RADV GFX1103_R1), type: IntegratedGpu

ENABLE_DEVICE_CHOOSER_LAYER=1 VULKAN_DEVICE_INDEX=1 vkcube

Using Vulkan device index 1
Using Vulkan device index 1
Selected GPU 0: llvmpipe (LLVM 18.1.8, 256 bits), type: Cpu

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My only suggestion would be to try out a live CD for Garuda or any other linux to make sure it’s not because of your current installation

Please can you also add the full output of “dmesg” and “lspci -k”.
If the dmesg output does not fit here, please paste it to pastebin.com or similar.
My guess is either the kernel device driver is not working correctly, or mesa is not configured correctly.
The above two outputs would help diagnose the kernel bits.

So I think something’s up? Because I rebooted to get clean dmesg logs as well as inxi, and this reboot, works? – This isn’t the first time this happened though. In this install, it’s the 2nd or 3rd time

If you have installed a new BIOS, it is a good idea to go into the BIOS and select “Optimized defaults” or similar to return the settings back to the BIOS defaults.

So it basically randomly does or does not work?

If so, you may want to make sure the interposer is seated properly

The BIOS I have is 3.03

I haven’t touched it since receiving it :skull: Tho you might have a point. If this happens again I’ll report here and tighten the screws on the interposer

Alas, one reboot later, and sudden KDE Plasma Crash, I noticed that the it must’ve been the GPU, cause after rebooting again, it does not see the 7700S.

I followed this advice, I had forgotten to do this after posting, but I just took the gpu off and re-seated and made sure the screws were tight, once booted in, so far no issues, GPU is detected, will report once again should this trouble arise again

Okay, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Unfortunately, one sudden freeze and crash later. Plasma restarted, which indicated to me that once again… The GPU has disconnected.
This is after re-seating the GPU and tightening the interposer board screws.
It is sad to say that, yes. This is now becoming a random, most likely hardware issue?

sudo dmesg | nc termbin.com 9999 # No-GPU Boot, current

What I find bothersome is that, the 7700S is found by lspci -k but can sometimes just stop working.

EDIT: Added logs from other commands that I forgot to put here.

I have some messy news. The Live Boot detects the GPU no problem and even shows up in vulkaninfo --summary which was the only thing I did to test it, after verifying there’s a GPU2, I rebooted and verified the install, and surprise~ the install did not detect it vulkaninfo --summary only returns GPU0 and GPU1. So I’ll reinstall and come back to see if that fixed the issue.

Also, pro tip. Keep / and /home in different partitions or drives if possible, I have this setup and can gladly say I won’t lose my data when reinstalling. (Unless LUKS requires reformatting)

22hr~ update.
I reinstalled Garuda Linux (Dragonized, non Gaming) and indeed the GPU was detected.
One reboot later, it’s still recognized.
One System Update and reboot later, still recognized.
One Garuda Setup Assitant, and reboot, still recognized.
After installing Steam, ALVR later, no hiccups.

I still haven’t tried any games or tools (besides Blender for video editing) so I haven’t been able to put this config through it’s paces as of yet.

Logs for anyone interested.

UPDATE! I think I may have discovered what caused it in the first place! Or so I think…

So I needed to print a document, and I noticed I hadn’t installed printer support on Garuda (the CUPS packages) so I decided to do so via the Garuda Assitant, a little helper app that lets you change a lot of settings, (ie Default Shell, Printing/Scanning/Virtualization/Firewall/a lot more, and reset stuff if you mess with it and wanna return to defaults)

Since Garuda Assistant lets you enable multiple things at once, I enabled Printing and Scanning support, Virtualization (with libvirt), Samba, AdGuard DNS, and Powersave Tweaks.

Screenshots

Since some of these require the user being added to their respective groups, and the DNS and hBlock suggest a restart, I did…

And then I noticed it took a bit longer to boot. I got the Samba daemon error, and immediately ran vulkaninfo --summary and noticed, GPU0 (iGPU), and GPU2 (CPU), no dedicated GPU, so I was back at the beginning of this thread.

I then disabled Samba and libVirt support and restarted and noticed that the 7700S was still not detected. So, to avoid jumping around and trying to pin-point out what caused this, I opted to simply use Snapper (Thank you, BTRFS) to return to a snapshot right before I ran enabled these things, effectively undoing Virtualization, Printer+Scanning, DNS, hBlock and PowerSave Tweaks.

I rebooted and ran vulkaninfo --summary to verify if the 7700S was detected, and indeed, it appeared in the listing.

So, I’ve boiled it down to either virtualization (considering it does have kernel modules), or most likely, Powersave tweaks.

If you guys want I can delve a bit deeper and enable virtualization first, and see if that changes anything. Otherwise, I think just avoid Powersave tweaks until a fix or workaround is found?
