Spontaneous reboots while using eGPU

I picked up a Razer Core X Chroma TB3 eGPU enclosure and put my GTX 1660 Ti in it and I’ve been using it with my laptop. I purchased the 7700S dGPU option, but due to the lack of 3rd party dock support, you can’t have a 1 cable solution.

I have a weird problem with the eGPU in that the system will spontaneously reboot, sometimes it’ll have up to 3 hours of uptime before a reboot, sometimes it’s fairly quick.

There is no BSOD, it just goes black and the framework EFI logo pops up, no warning, no feedback.

I’d like to figure out how to get it to BSOD if possible, or determine if this is even an OS crash/reboot or a hardware issue.

My hunch is that this is a bug in the framework BIOS firmware and not a Windows 11 OS issue.

For info, I ran DDU and removed all drivers, then reinstalled the latest AMD and Nvidia drivers, no change in behavior.

I also purchased a brand new Thunderbolt 4 cable just in case the previous owner of the Razer had damaged the TB3 cable in some meaningful way.

I read the Razer eGPU enclosure is the most respected and sought enclosure, so that’s why I’m using that one.

For what it’s worth, I’m using a Razer Core X (RTX 3070ti) with Linux and not having reboot issues.

UPDATE: I acquired and installed an RX 6750XT GPU into the Razer enclosure and it seems stable. I’m guessing the GTX 1660 Ti with Nvidia drivers doesn’t play nicely in Windows 11?

Hi @Perry_Harrington,

My guess is a card that old just does not play nice with such a modern version of Windows and such new AMD processors and support chipsets. Glad to hear the 6750XT is rocking your setup now. That card is so much faster than the 1660 TI. Thank you for the update!

It’s like one generation behind, nvida abandons old cards fast but not this fast.
