Student willing to buy a Framework: is everything out of stock?

Note there is a difference between USB-C hubs and Thunderbolt hubs. The latter being more expensive but generally working pretty much perfectly. The former, while cheaper, are flaky garbage and I would not wish them on my worst enemy.

Hum… well I was thinking about going with this one because of good reviews but maybe I should reconsider my choice

Yeah that’s way too good to be true. 4 stars with just 36 reviews isn’t all that great and given that it’s type c and not Thunderbolt (or even USB4), I would avoid it.

Okay, thanks for the advice, and what would you advise for a student on a budget @Morpheus636 ? (for the reviews I was talking of a youtube video reviewing the product)

I bought a store-brand 6 or 7 in 1 type-c hub for 30CAD going into university and it served me fine to connect mouse/keyboard/headphones/monitor when I was back at my desk, apart from not supporting the full 1440p/144hz of my display. I think Thunderbolt’s overkill unless you’re a professional who needs the reliability for work or wants to drive high bandwidth monitors and networking.

Yeah I think so, because my Ethernet connection at home caps at 100MB/s and my monitor is only 1080p@60Hz. I don’t think I need blazing fast connection or anything. By the way, when you were (or are) going to uni, do you just leave the hub on your desk or do you unplug all your devices and bring the hub with you ? @Nich_Trimble

@Physarum If buying a USB dock (not Thunderbolt)just make sure it is USB-IF certified, that alone will pretty much guarantee some measure of quality. The product packaging or page should mention if it is certified and there is an online database that you can use to look up products. Thunderbolt is a whole different ballgame that I’m more than a little annoyed about and significantly increases costs so if on a budget, I can’t recommend it.

I just unplug the dock from my Framework. Part of the point is it makes it easy to dock/undock, and the laptop has enough ports for what I need out and about- I usually run 1/2 USB-C, 1/2 USB-A, and an HDMI.
