Swap Expansion Cards While Powered On?

Hello, everyone!

I recently purchased a new-to-me FW13 Intel 1260p secondhand. I’m running Windows 11 Pro 24H2. So far, I love it!!

To the point though, is it safe to simply close the lid and put the laptop in Sleep mode when swapping out expansion cards?

Out of an abundance of caution, I’ve been doing Shut Downs before I swap any of the cards around.

Obviously, it would save time to not do that, but i definitely don’t want to break anything for a savings of a few seconds.

Thanks!

Put it this way: you can take the cards out and plug them into any other device. They’re just individual adapters, like dongles.

I know the USB ones are for certain. I’m almost certain the other ports work the same way, but maybe someone else can confirm. Same should be true for the storage card - you can plug it into your phone and use it like a flash drive.

Therefore you don’t need to do anything, you can unplug them anytime you want, they’re nothing unique, just usbc, that’s the idea!

haha thanks! i figured as much, but i was afraid to risk it without confirmation.

For anyone unaware - Best practice is to unmount the filesystem before removing the storage card. Maybe “eject” it too. Same for sd-card storage etc.

Other things may be best to remove from use at the software or system level before unplugging them. But adapter cards like USB, DVI, HDMI cards, yeah, unplug - replug at will.
