This is the Clevo 5620D chassis, most famous for being used in the original Alienware Area 51m from 2002. The R&D work has already been done. The tooling has already been made. All we need is someone to call Clevo and ask “hey, can you make this again?” and there will once again be a generic, industry-standard, user-serviceable laptop chassis with a 4:3, 15-inch screen (preferably with a 1600x200 resolution).
That which is old is new again. The saddest thing is at one time MOST tech was user-serviceable; Radio Shack wasn’t always a (dead) place to get overpriced phones and junky peripherals. Phones, MP3 players, cars, clocks and lamps - you name it, it was probably not hard to open up and look around inside. This was all a conscious effort by both companies and consumers to move away from repairing our own things in the name of “convenience and efficiency.” Supposedly.
Only question is, at this point, is it still possible to go back? FW’s made some good strides on that front, but I’d like to see them further lead the charge in some ways like you’ve mentioned here.
