If not an influencer, then maybe an “influencer.” Not many people dare to destroy their devices for fun. They usually do it for money. But you did us all a solid by sacrificing your 12 early on. It’s nice to see Framework recognizing that fact and providing replacement.
@BigT should be feared for their dedication to science if anything.
FTFY.
Surprisingly, my batch 10 unit still has not shown any cracks or damage whatsoever. I’ve been going to work with it daily. Usually I am tossing my laptop (back) bag into the passenger seat of my car, then slamming it onto the top of lockers at my work.
For reference, I got my laptop after the suggestion of only using the supplied screwdriver and hand tightening the screws. I guess I’m just lucky?
When I order a new laptop today, would I get the new version of the cover?
What was the reason for the cracks?
What were the design changes?
(I cancelled my batch 6 order in august, but promised to buy again when I’m convinced that the issue is solved.)
You should wait until a few of us get the new cover design in and have used it for a couple weeks if you wanna make sure the cracks are totally solved. They usually appear after anywhere from 1-2 weeks of use. I’ll definitely be posting updates when I get a new cover.
Eagle addressed these questions in their post here.
Got the e-mail that my replacement cover is on its way!
Hi okeeblow,
Thank you for your patience. We have placed an order for your brand new Framework Bottom Cover. Please find the details in your Framework account.
When you receive the new Bottom Cover, please open the packaging carefully as it can be easily damaged during the unboxing process. Here is the step-by-step Bottom Cover Replacement Guide you can follow once you receive it.
For the original part, we have decided not to require its return to avoid additional CO2 impact so feel free to repurpose it. If not, please dispose of it in an ecologically friendly way, such as a local e-recycler.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. We’re here to help.
Thank you for reaching Framework support. Have a great day!
And indeed:
Thanks, Framework! Very quick turnaround from my original support e-mail on November 14th. When it gets here I’ll bust out my macro lens and some oblique lighting and take some good photos of my original bottom cover’s “worst case” (highest number of hinge cycles, since shipping will still take some days).
Glad to see them resolving this issue in what will ultimately be a very short amount of time in the lifespan of the Framework 12 platform. I’m glad they took a risk on a new case design and material for the FW12 even if it took them six months to “git gud” at it, considering the design and case material are what made me fall in love with the FW12 and become a Framework customer in the first place. Beautiful machine <3
I just got my replacement gray machine, and got everything swapped over. Everything seems to be working as it should. And it seems that they may have fixed another little issue. This is the one of four FW 12s I’ve now seen (original gray and sage, replacement sage, and now this replacement gray), and it is the first one where the trackpad is perfectly centered, all the way around.
I also set the performance mode in the BIOS to “Max Battery,” just to see what it would do. Before, I got the “fan not detected” message. I don’t get that anymore either. Maybe just a fluke. But either way, it’s nice to see.
The fan not detected warning came back. Oh, well. Everything else is still good so far. So that’s not fixed yet. Honestly, I thought they were still working on it, so I was more surprised that I didn’t get it than that it now came back. But I wanted to make sure people didn’t think it was fixed.
I got my replacement bottom cover yesterday.
Took me about half an hour to get everything swapped over. I think I could do it quicker but I chose to carefully follow the guide even though I know how to do it just to avoid any slip ups.
I checked and this cover was indeed made last month according to the stamps on the inside.
So far no cracks and the clicking is gone :3
(my stickers are missing from the expansion card slots just like many others here. I shouldn’t care but for some reason I kinda liked the stickers. Oh well.)
I’m gonna keep a close eye on it anyways and I’ll update if I see anything odd.
Thanks, Framework! ![]()
Now, to see what y’all’s covers end up like after a few weeks…
Is there a new bottom cover or are the replacements people are getting the same ones? I still have an open ticket to get a replacement.
There is a new, re-designed bottom cover that they are starting to ship out. Supposedly, the new gray machine and the new sage bottom cover I was sent are the new design.
Is there any visible differences with the new design that you have noticed?
With the gray machine, there were no super obvious outward differences. I have been super busy lately, so I just got my RAM and SSD swapped over and took it straight to FedEx to ship back the old one. So I didn’t get a chance to look super close.
But I don’t have to ship back the sage bottom cover, so I haven’t actually taken the time to swap it out yet (busy). As soon as I get a chance to sit down and switch it out, I plan to look really close for any differences. I’ll report back if there’s anything obvious.
I will say that when assembling my new gray unit, I didn’t notice that any of the screws seemed to flex the bottom case before getting tight. But again, I didn’t have a ton of time to really check it out. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it, and will compare the sage bottom covers much more closely when I do that swap.
