The FW16 driver bundle contains a modified version of the 23.40.18.02 AMD graphics driver. ROCm (AMD’s CUDA “competitor”) requires at least 24.6.1, which came out in July 2024.
I’ve seen that a lot of people have had issues if they ditch the Framework driver package and instead use the off-the-shelf AMD driver (the release notes even excludes the RX 7700S, but includes the RX 7900M). Are there any plans to update the FW16’s driver bundle to include a version that supports ROCm?
I’m on the 24.8.1, and other than the acknowledged bug that Adrenaline pops up on every resume, it’s smooth sailing. Probably, 24.7.1 is even better. So I’d encourage you to try one of those versions for your needs, as you can downgrade anytime to the official driver if you find it somehow not working.
I run the latest AMD drivers directly from AMD so I can get the latest framegen, etc. I also noticed better power control on balanced power profile in windows so battery doesn’t drain under high load plugged in (unfortunately still does at high performance profile). Seems to work fine for me! Better than the shipped driver, that’s for sure.
