I updated with no problem, which suggests it’s either a random chance thing, and/or depends on something else like perhaps what you have connected to your USB ports as you update. I have always been careful not to have anything other than my charger connected when updating my BIOS. Perhaps those reporting their bricking could report more info than just “it happened to me”, like what was connected, and how you did the update (running the .exe updater file in Windows was my method).
BIOS updates on my other (non Framework) PCs have always taken a minimum of several minutes.
You have to factor in that the firmware is not written to normal fast storage like an SSD. It is written to an SPI chip which has a much slower write speed. I found a post on this forum claiming the firmware chip is a winbond 25R256JVEN and a github thread where someone said they found a flasher able to write that chip in “only” 2 minutes. I assume framework’s flashing process runs at a slower speed to reduce the risk of corruption.
Hi,
On the FW16 AMD 7840HS mainboard. The bios flash chip can be written in about 5 seconds according to a coreboot developer. But, that was with an external flash tool.
The flash method used by framework might be slower.
FW have just mentioned that they have found the cause of the bricking, so hopefully there will be a fix in nov or dec this year.
It’s definitely random. There are reports from people who were updating a batch of machines for their workplace, and most went fine and one bricked.
I doubt that it’s due to some external factor, just because of how much it’s happened and the specificity of this one particular version involved when it generally wasn’t an issue before, but sure, could be.
It makes sense to me why it might be slower than is theoretically possible – it’s just not really a priority to make this stuff happen quickly whereas stability and reliability are vital. If it takes a few minutes I’m not bothered about that as long as it completes + the machine doesn’t brick.
But that is on the AI series processor, not the 7040 series. It may be a case of hoping the reason is the same though.
Really? Do you know where they mentored that?
