USB C is not compatible with iPhone 15 / Pro / Pro Max

I wouldn’t expect that monitor to follow standards either

I hope Framework finds a resolution that helps you guys, but saying all devices are effected is false. None of the phones in my house have this problem when plugged into the Framework16. All of them connect, start charging off the laptop, and allow me to access their files. No cycling of roles, disconnecting, or any of that.

Update:

I demoed the issue when I was in Ubuntu Summit in The Hague where Framework has a booth over there. Their firmware developer later replied to me that this issue is still under investigation.

And there are two things I got from their developer:

  1. They have control of the PD controller firmware, however due to the license of the SDK they are unable to release that part of the source code.
  2. Their Expansion Cards don’t use PD protocol to define special features.

Please correct me if I’m wrong about this.

A year later…and we’re already with iPhone 16.

As much as the chassis and other components might have a 10-year+ life… The usefulness and price premium on ‘current’ tech does somewhat, indirectly, demand functional issues to be resolved sooner rather than later, no?

How many 1-year-and-unresolved issues are people willing to put up with?

Well of course not, the usbC expansion cards are just “wires” to extend them to the edge of the laptop. There is no smarts in them.

I mean, at least Framework doesn’t go Apple by using Vendor-defined Messages in PD protocol to expose some features:

Btw, this issue does not happen on Intel Core Ultra Series 1 systems.

AFAIK, it doesn’t happen on any Intel system. Every complaint I’ve read used an AMD system.

This issue, albeit seemingly one in the same, combined with being unable to use external USB C one wire powered “portable monitors” is nearly a deal breaker at this point. Definitely will be re-evaluating what I am doing next hardware upgrade time which is unfortunate because I want to love everything about FW16. :frowning:

This might not be enough to make it less of a deal breaker for you, but there are portable monitors that work fine with AMD FW over a single USB C.

Is there a list compiled somewhere of definitive “yes” screens? It seems like some decision alluded to that the 2.5k or 2560/1600 resolution screens were most successfully working?
