What if Framework made headphones?

Hello Everyone,

I am a product design student, I’ve decided to base a project around reparability in electronic products. Headphones stand out to me as an easily breakable and a hard to fix product. My project will aim to tackle these problems and create a new product.

Framework is a big inspiration for this project and im curious about what the community thinks to this idea and would love to hear any input.

So …

Do you think this would be a viable product? What Features should it have? What can I do to make it Reparable? How would this idea manifest itself? Any ideas or inspiration would be helpful.

Thank you

A log of high-end “audiophile” headphones have repair parts available, ear pads, cords, things like that. One feature might be offering that at a reasonable price

A): Make everything that bends swivels or moves in other ways out of metal. No need to be repairable if it doesn’t break.

B) No wire, have the headphone have a mini-xlr or at least TRRS plug

C) If you want it to also be wireless, make the battery replaceable and some kind of standard form factor, e.g. 14250

D) If there is software, open source it

E) Use a form factor for the earpads, that’s compatible with a major brand, like beyerdynamic. So that replacements can be had, even long after you lost interest in the product

F) I personally enjoy over-ear headphones

Thank you. Completely agree with the point about easily replaceable battery

Please yes!

This would be ideal.
At first it might seem too costly, but at least one can use embedding metal re-enforcements into 3d prints.

Just want to check, have you seen what Ploopy Co. and Fairphone have done?
