Will there be a Japanese keyboard layout for the Framework 16?

And if I order now for delivery 2024 Q2, would I be able to swap to a Japanese keyboard without going to the back of the queue?

If you email Framework support after you place your order, they can swap out the keyboard without canceling your order.

I don’t know if or when a Japanese keyboard might be offered though.

Wish the spacebar was even smaller (e.g. instead of muhenkan being made smaller), but I can’t wait for any nerf to the spacebar

I feel it. At my desk, I can use an external keyboard, but taking the laptop anywhere the laptop keyboard’s mappings are all wrong and it’s missing keys. So you are not alone.

I suspect this layout is treated as a lower priority since Framework only ships to North America, parts of Europe, Australia, and Taiwan.

It is a shame one cannot show what the demand is to FW for FW16 Japan keyboard. The FW13 has a Japan keyboard.
Maybe FW could add a pre-order for Japan keyboard, and if the amount of order reaches a quantity where manufacture is worth while, it would produce a batch.
Currently, there is no way for FW to gauge demand.

I like this idea very much. I would even be inclined to throw additional money at the problem without expectation of additional keyboards or other rewards, just to help fund at least one production run.

I just discovered the Framework 16 and planning to order one.

I understand that a Japanese keyboard will be released, but I’d like to know what the earliest timeline for that would be.

I’d prefer to order with a JP keyboard from the start, rather than ordering with a non-JP keyboard I know I won’t be using.

I would assume the JP keyboard will be released when Framework is able to add Japan to the list of countries that they are able to ship to and provide support to. Unfortunately, there is never a timeline which Framework can share. Some governments make it a long process, but if a company makes public that officials seem to making it slow, well, they may slow it even more in response.

I had thought that since the Framework 13 has a JP keyboard option, it was a given to have it be available for the 16, but I guess I’ll wait a bit and see if any plans are announced.
