1440x960 resolution on the 2.8k display

The 2.8k display on my FW13 7640u for some reason doesn’t present 1440x960 as a supported resolution, the closest is 1440x900. I know I can add custom resolutions and it works (xrandr on Linux in my case), but it would be nice if the monitor actually reported pretty much the only non-native resolution that makes sense.

I’ve asked it a while ago on the Discord, but since that got shut down I don’t know if it was ever picked up or if there’s a reason why the monitor doesn’t report this resolution. I assume it would need to have the EDID reprogrammed.

Using this modeline: Modeline "1440x960_120.00" 245.25 1440 1560 1712 1984 960 963 973 1032 -hsync +vsync

I am not really sure what the point of having 1440x960 in the list of resolutions would be given that, in year 2026, you would actually achieve it by selecting 2880x1920 with 200% scaling anyway.

I think this list of resolutions in EDID is mostly a legacy backwards-compatibility thing anyway. So it makes sense to me that they would populate it with a bunch of legacy “standard” resolutions that are not achievable from the native one by scaling with a reasonable coefficient.

This is a legal claim to me. First, not all desktop environments bring the ability to set scaling. And second, no all programs handle the scaling correctly. So setting the overall resolution can handle those problems, and maybe others too.

It improves performance in some games, sometimes quite significantly. In World of Warships easily around 20% for example. Some games just don’t handle resolution settings well. The nice thing about the 2.8k screen is that 1140x960 is still a very usable resolution on a screen this size without looking like it’s coated in vaseline.
It should be a fairly trivial addition, the panel supports it just fine (at least on 120hz). It just isn’t reporting it.
