3840x1080 (32:9) @ 120Hz via USB-C docking station?

I am running into refresh rate limitations when trying to connect to my external display using a USB-C dock, and I am trying to figure out where this limitation is coming from:

  • OS: Windows 11, 24H2, latest drivers
  • Laptop: Framework 13 7840U
  • External Display: 3840x1080 @ 120Hz
  • Laptop ↔ Display connections:
    • Full resolution & refresh rate supported:
      • Using HDMI expansion card
    • Limited support (either 3840x1080 @ 60Hz or low resolution @ 120Hz):
      • Surface Travel Hub
      • Lenovo USB-C travel hub
      • Icy Box IB-DK4040-CPD

As you can see, none of the hubs I tried were able to drive the display at the full resolution & refresh rate, even though it should work out bandwidth-wise (at least the first two explicitly advertise 4K@60Hz).

What is going on here? Can the laptop just not support this bandwidth via a dock? Are the docks not explicitly supporting this β€œstrange” resolution/refresh rate combination, even though the bandwidth would be there? Does anyone know of a USB-C dock that supports at least 3840x1080 @ 120Hz, power delivery and ethernet?
