I am running into refresh rate limitations when trying to connect to my external display using a USB-C dock, and I am trying to figure out where this limitation is coming from:
- OS: Windows 11, 24H2, latest drivers
- Laptop: Framework 13 7840U
- External Display: 3840x1080 @ 120Hz
- Laptop β Display connections:
- Full resolution & refresh rate supported:
- Using HDMI expansion card
- Limited support (either 3840x1080 @ 60Hz or low resolution @ 120Hz):
- Surface Travel Hub
- Lenovo USB-C travel hub
- Icy Box IB-DK4040-CPD
- Full resolution & refresh rate supported:
As you can see, none of the hubs I tried were able to drive the display at the full resolution & refresh rate, even though it should work out bandwidth-wise (at least the first two explicitly advertise 4K@60Hz).
What is going on here? Can the laptop just not support this bandwidth via a dock? Are the docks not explicitly supporting this βstrangeβ resolution/refresh rate combination, even though the bandwidth would be there? Does anyone know of a USB-C dock that supports at least 3840x1080 @ 120Hz, power delivery and ethernet?
