64gb ram for framework 12 single sodimm?

yeah, true.

Sorry if I may not know the terminology but I what I was trying to say is that 16 of the 64gb memory stick might not be useable due to a memory controller limitation. I think it will work but at the end of the day, I just don’t know.

And I am saying I kind of doubt that bit.

Don’t remember where exactly I read / saw it, but didn’t @nrp himself say that he is using a 64GB RAM module currently in his pre-production model? They just did not officially test the bigger modules yet, but he confirmed 64GB to work just fine.

I doubt it too but I don’t want to be the one saying that “It’ll work” and then not have it work.

ah okay cool!

Haha. Was worried for a second that I’m misremembering and spreading rumors. Did a quick search and here it is:

I’m going to stick to 32GB for now, that’s plenty for my personal use.

Amazing how the reply from nrp has now been linked twice in this thread. And the original is actually in this very thread.

Yeah. And the best part is: My reply with the answer was directly above the first quastion from @HardHat_Media :see_no_evil_monkey: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Curious that if 64GB RAM is still stable after using in these months? I’m going to order a memory for the upcoming FW12… Also found this thread:

It was the ram stick itself that was bad; I swapped it out for another 64gb stick that was used in another framework laptop over the last year and my troubles went away.

Curiously I did run memtest on the bad stick over 24 hours and it was passing when I finally decided to shut it off…

So you mean… Now you’re using 64 GB RAM stick on FW 12 without problem?

Also curious that do you find that if 64GB RAM decreases battery life, or generate more heat, compare to lower-capacity of RAM? Thanks!

yes

I don’t know, I only stuck in a 48GB stick temporarily to check if the problem was the RAM stick that was in it. However at idle I think the lowest I’ve seen is something like 3 or 3.5 watts usage which is lower than I can get with the AMD 7840U 13 (~5/6 watts) or a 7940HS 16 (~7/8 watts). I know they say that more ram will use more power but as far as overall system power usage I’ve never noticed a drop when upgrading.

are you using a Crucial CT64G56C46S5?

Yes, from this listing: Crucial 64GB DDR5 RAM 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory, SODIMM 262-Pin, Compatible with Latest Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen 8000 & Above – CT64G56C46S5 at Amazon.com

sorry for the possibly annoying reply chain, but I forgot to ask this in the original question. The Crucial stick from the listing you provided is the one that works properly right?

The one that’s working is from a pair but they’re labelled exactly the same.

FYI: I also have the 64GB Crucial CT64G56C46S5 in my batch 1 laptop 12 and it has been running without any problem (a little over a month now).

Edit: This was meant as a reply to @twisted_nematic57 , not @ryanpetris , sorry)

after several months of use I think 64GB is way too much for framework 12, I got CPU usage to 85 percent when compile GCC and only used around 38GB of ram.
