64gb ram for framework 12 single sodimm?

hi, is there a bios / hw restriction to 48gb ddr5 5200 sodimm?

i see there are 64gb sticks in retail, wondering if they would work:

google search CT64G56C46S5 if link is stripped

It seems there is a limitation of hardware. The linked DDR5 64GB is too large for Laptop 12. This Reddit thread may be helpful for you.

There is a solid chance that’ll work but somebody need to test it. These things came out very recently so it is understandable that the max specs say 48GB which was the previously biggest sticks you can get.

oh i saw that thread. it was about nvme. i was asking about the ram limitation

The specs for the CPU itself shows a max RAM of 96GB. Being two channels, I assume that’s 48GB per channel. I don’t know how the limits work. Would the chip itself be able to use more than 48GB per channel if it is dual channel with a max of 96?

thanks @Adrian_Joachim this is what i was thinking as well.

i think prior laptops used to say they supported 32gb sticks only and got updated as well once the 48gb sticks were tested

I would bet that a 64GB stick will work, it’s just so new that is wasn’t properly tested yet.

Oh, you are right. I am sorry for my mistake..

Can you put a 5600 RAM to FL12 and expect it to run at 5200? Or it won’t work and you need 5200 to work

the ram selection from framework is ddr5400. chip underclocks and runs at ddr5200.

Since it’s using jdec profiles that usually works. My 5600 ram also manages to downclock to 4800 when combined with another 4800 stick in the 13 even if it isn’t explicitly mentioned in the datasheet.

And my 6000 sticks manage to run at 3600 in my desktop but that is a different sad story XD.

As with many other things in this community. Someone will test this in the future when they have the FW12.

I’m currently using a 64GB CSODIMM in my Framework Laptop 12. We haven’t done full validation of it though, and it’s not something Intel tested on their side for 13th Gen either, so we state 48GB as the max for memory capacity.

Good to know there’s a chance, even unofficially. Thanks for sharing.

I think the following thread on the Framework’s subreddit is related to this thread’s topic.

Framework Laptop Memory Compatibility Thread on Framework Reddit

Framework Laptop 12 - Intel®Core™ 13th Gen

DDR5 SO-DIMMs up to 48GB each at up to to DDR5-5600 speeds are compatible with the Framework Laptop 13. While memory that meets that standard should work, the memory we sell in the Framework Marketplace is tested for compatibility. We recommend avoiding XMP DDR5.
