(7840u) 16gb vs 32gb Games Benchmark Questions

I have found myself in what I would assume to be a slightly unique situation. I preordered a Framework 13 7840u (Batch 9 represent) back in 2023. I didn’t realize at the time that a minimum of 24gb of RAM is required to get the full 4gb of VRAM out of the iGPU, so I ordered 16gb of RAM. I’ve recently ordered a few upgrades, including the 120hz screen, WiFi 7 chip, and most importantly, 2x16gb official RAM.

I’m going to be posting a benchmark for a few games before and after to see how much of a difference it makes.

  • Battery: Plugged in with a 100w charger, at 100% battery
  • OS: Bazzite (Kernel 6.15.9-103.bazzite, Fedora 42)
  • Power Mode: Performance
  • Firmware Version: 03.09
  • BIOS Gaming Mode: On
  • Games: Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring, The Witcher 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Deadlock

Each game will immediately run after a reboot, either using an official benchmark provided by the game, or in the exact same spot between RAM configurations. No other background applications will be running, and I/O will only consist of a Mouse plugged in (using the 120hz monitor).

Is there anything else that I will need to keep in mind by doing this benchmark (Like setting fans to 100%, making sure Steam is set to allow full TDP, setting GPU timings, etc.)?

And lastly, are there any other games anybody would be curious to see results for?

Thanks.

*4Gb of STATICALLY allocated vram, with 16Gb you can still dynamically allocate up to 8Gb by default.

As long as that came in the form of 2x8gb sticks and not 1x16gb one I am not expecting big performance differences. (If you are going from single to dual channel there definitely will be)

Setting a fixed fan speed and making sure the vents are unobstructed definitely removes some variables.

Depending what exactly you want to test it may also make sense to raise the stapm skin temperature limit (ryzenadj --apu-skin-temp) to remove that variable from the mix.

Cyberpunk, Stellaris, maybe something like ace combat 6 or project wingman?

I didn’t realize there was a distinction between statically and dynamically allocated vRAM, going to learn a bit more about that.

Good idea for the unobstructed fans and temperature limit, I’ll make sure those stay the same as well.

I’ll test Cyberpunk and Stellaris as well! I have Ace Combat 7, unfortunately don’t have AC6 or Project Wingman.

Thank you for the input!

It is kind of a perk of having the gpu and cpu share the same memorycontroller.

That’s what I meant, little keyboard mishap (and if you liked that one you may want to check out project wingman XD)

Ensure you have really good airflow, because the chip regulates its power usage to maintain temperatures. Would also be nice if you could log your actual wattage.

If you don’t care about case temperatures, you can look at this unlocker which I use myself. I’ve been running my system at 100ºC core temps for many hours daily over months now with no problems. 64 GB Ram, out of which 8 are for the iGPU.

On X11 I get more fps by lowering my desktops resolution to the desired games resolution before launching it.
