What’s the reason of stopping 7840U’s production while continuing 7640U

I’m guessing it’s about price. The 7640U is probably less expensive for Framework to buy than any AI 300 series CPU, so keeping that available lets them offer a less expensive option for customers who want an AMD Framework but don’t need high performance. The 7840U likely costs more than an AI 340 so it has less reason to stay around.

Is there any rough timing for 7640u with standard screen restock? (USA)
It seems as if that will be the ‘base’ model kept in production going forward for at least a little while, correct?
Do you know if restock/new production 7640u models will have the new TPM used in AI series?
yes, 7640U is still in production, no ETA for restock unfortunately. I think the support team can confirm the PTM situation.

Heads-up: Both the 7640U and 7840U are available again but only with the new 2.8K display.

That seems to be the case. The listing for the 7840U in the configurator page has been entirely removed:
The 7840U based mainboard is still available however in the marketplace.
Just wondering if you have a ETA for the Danish keyboard layout, and I find it quite odd that it’s out of stock on the Intel one since on the marketplace it’s in stock (the non 2nd gen variant, which I belive it uses).

I was looking at buying the 7640U + 2.8k display yesterday and noticed it had gone out of stock by the time I had gotten home.
After reading this thread, it seems like i juuuuuuust missed the boat for the forever-ever last batch of them. Is this correct?
We’re still carrying 7640u + 2.8k display so if it’s out of stock it will come back, but 7840u is until supplies last.

Why is 7840U available as a standalone but not on the configurator page? How can one order a new laptop with 7840U?

They’re limited stock, so they might not be available across the site. If the 7840u is not available/listed, then it is most likely gone.
The thing is that it’s available as a separate part (the motherboard) but not on the DIY page. Isn’t it supposed to be in both places until the final supply is depleted?
There’s nothing atm that matches the 7840U in terms of GPU power at the same price point. You have to step up to the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.

The 7640u is out of stock right now. Options are there for the base model and the 2.8k screen, but they’re grayed out.
Just an FYI…(Not trying to steal Canadian customers from Framework as 7840u FL13 is out of stock), if you’re in Canada…and dead set on having a 7840U (above all else), the ThinkPad Z13 AMD 7840U are on sale (three models):
The absolute downsides…soldered RAM, soldered wifi. Pick your battles.
I think this is a BIG issuez because the Ryzen AI mainboards are all impossibly expensive for what they offer. I could literally buy an entire new laptop for the price of the motherboard alone, with the same CPU (Ai 7 is 820€, here’s a complete laptop without soldered ram or ssd for 775€ and the same CPU, both would need RAM to get to 32 GB, the FW needs an extra 32€ for the network card; so, 850€ to keep the same chassis and screen, with potential slight damage due to use (which would not be a problem if the price was right), terrible speaker, IPS, incredibly poor wifi reception, or 775€ to get a brand new everything with OLED, for sure better wifi reception and likely better speakers).
The selling point of FW should be repairability and upgradeability, but it’s quite literally antieconomical to do so, as you can get the same new hardware for less money by buying a complete package.
The only mianboards that make economical sense (on the AMD side) are the Ryzen 5 7640U and the 7840U, since any PC you can buy for less that 600€ is basically e-waste and with the 7840U you would get something without competition for the money. And now the only one that makes sense is the 7640U, which is not much of an upgrade for 460€.
I really struggle to see the value of a Framework laptop these days, the 7840U was the only one that made it make sense. But if you stop production of the decent last gen mono that makes economic sense, why would I get a Framework at all? The 12 is way too expensive for what it is, the 13 is already 40% more than the competition (which would be justifiable if replacement parts and upgrade paths was cheaper than upgrading the entire thing), the 16 struggles with build quality and absurd pricing.
I support right to repair and the mission, otherwise I would not have bought my 13, ai would not have convinced 2 friends to get theirs. But this is madness.
And I know that you won’t care about losing my business because you’re getting more and more people, but this is the wrong direction overall. If you keep increasing orices and you don’t keep the “cheaper” old stuff around, less and less people will choose to pay just for the philosophy.
