Batch 2 - FW13 (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series) _ Guild Q3 2024

Hello fellow Batch 2 AMD Ryzen Q3 2024 friends!

I figured I would start a Batch 2 Guild as I and others have been pestering the batch 1 folks in their thread.

The excitement is real!

My build:
FW 13 AMD Ryzen™ 7840U with the 2.8K display

I’m looking forward to getting it! It will be my first Framework. I have wanted one of these for years, but didn’t “need” one until now.

I’ll be taking mine all over the world with me starting January 2025. I will be traveling for work from Jan 2025 - Feb 2026. After that, I’ll be traveling 100% of the time. For work, 50-75% of the time and the rest of the time, is for leisure. I’m a merchant mariner by trade here in the US. I’m hoping my Framework will hold up to the travel! I’ll be carrying it on planes with me in a North Face duffel surrounded by my paperwork and a change of clothes. I’m bringing spare parts with me as I will be away for months at a time.

I have not received an order update yet. When I do, I will post here ASAP! I hope you do the same.
Also, I’ve been following along here for updates. I’m hoping to see some folks posting about their Batch 1 order updates this week!
I’ve also been checking Youtube for review videos about the updated models. I’m also hoping to see some this week.

Also in this batch with FW 13 AMD Ryzen™ 7840U with the 2.8K display

I have an 11th gen i5 FW13 that has been absolutely fantastic, but kind of struggled when hooked up to an external display. The 7840U sounds like it has plenty of juice to power a 120hz 4k display which will be huge for my work.

2.8k display is a nice bonus although I thought the display that comes with the current FW13 was pretty pixel dense  the added refresh rate will be v nice

I just got a FW13 a couple weeks ago. Regular (non-2.8k) AMD 7840U version.
Other than the screen, and webcam, are there any other differences?

I opted to get the regular version, not the 2.8k screen one, because I cannot do the rounded corners (thank you FW for indicating such!). I don’t care how perfect the screen is, my brain won’t let me accept rounded corners on a PC (I can barely tolerate them on phones).
Also, I needed it and couldn’t wait (my wife’s surface book died a couple months ago, and my own laptop started failing last month, so it was time).

I would have liked the new webcam module though.

I think the battery is different. I’m unsure. The old battery was 50-something watt hours and the new battery is 60-something watt hours. I’m unsure of when they swapped to the new battery. Other than what you have mentioned, they should be the same. You can always upgrade that webcam module when they’re available.

Batch 1 orders got their processing emails today, by the way!!! That means we are next!!!

Thanks, the 61-Wh battery seems to be in the higher CPU, which I got. So I have that battery.
I didn’t think anything else changed, so that’s good.
Glad the webcam is upgradable. I love how great FW is with the part compatibility.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread…

Welcome to the forums, by the way. Glad to hear you’re liking the FW 13. This will be my first experience with FrameWork and I’m dying to get a hold of it!

What OS are you running?

Since it’s a shared laptop, I put Windows 10 on it. I will not touch Windows 11, and I’ll go (back) to linux first after 10’s EOL.
I got the AMD version specifically so it could do some light gaming (which it does nicely) so my wife has something to play on (I just use my Steam Deck). She has used linux before, but I’d rather keep the behavior more predicable (plus for guests that use it).

I went aftermarket with RAM and SSD, got a 32GB Crucial kit and 2TB Samsung 990 Pro from Amazon on Prime Day in anticipation of getting this. The thing screams. From cold boot to logged in desktop in under 15 seconds.

Oh man! I understand so much!
Win 11 is terrible. I have it on my gaming PC and regret it.

What games have you played on it? I am looking forward to doing some light gaming on mine! I’m so curious to see what it will run and what it won’t.

I’m going to run Fedora because that is what the folks here have recommended to me. I’m coming from Ubuntu. I’m a newer/basic linux user at just 2 years.

I primarily set up STO for me, which I didn’t expect any issues with, and indeed there were none.
The primary games I wanted to get running on there though were Sims 4 and Hogwarts Legacy for my wife.
Both of those run fine as well. Sims 4 I also expected no issues due to its age.
HL, I managed to get 45 FPS using FSR.
I also set up Jurassic World Evolution 1 & 2, and those work very well (100+ fps on low, I think FSR was enabled too, they called it “upscaling AA”).

The fan can get pretty loud when you’re really exercising the system (it’s silent otherwise), so my personal preference is to minimize fan noise/maximize battery.

For reference, here’s my Time Spy 3DMark score (3316): AMD Radeon 780M video card benchmark result - AMD Ryzen 7 7840U,Framework FRANMDCP07.
Should hopefully give you an idea of the performance of this thing.

EDIT: Just because it gave me a “legendary score” achievement… I wanted to share the Steel Nomad score. It’s a whopping 505, but apparently the world’s best right now for this CPU: AMD Radeon 780M video card benchmark result - AMD Ryzen 7 7840U,Framework FRANMDCP07.
I guess that’s a testament to the cooling solution developed by FW.

EDIT2:
I bumped up the UMA buffer size to “gaming mode” (4GB), and the scores increased slightly. 3316 → 3416 and 505 → 506, respectively.
How much difference that makes in practice, I’m not sure.

That’s good to hear! Thanks for the info. I’m so glad to hear that the laptop is running well. I just need to get my hands on one!

Batch 2 here also, 7840u with the 2.8k screen.

Just ordered RAM sticks (2x16) and 1TB SSD so now I am just waiting once we get the preparation emails. Hopefully it would be this week but not holding my breath on it :stuck_out_tongue:

Linux will be the only OS on it, just haven’t decided if its going to be CachyOS (Arch based) or Bluefin (Fedora atomic) yet.

Hi,
I have take the AMD 7640 (with 2.8K display) too.
My actual laptop is dead, I don’t realy need it everyday or for work, but i’m so exited to have my framework. The wait is so long.
I will use 3 OS :joy:
An Kubuntu for everyday use
An windows for gaming
An kali for training security skill.

Did you know if kali run great on framework or did I need to use VM ?

Thank everyone

Hiya! Another Batch 2’er here anxiously waiting. This will be my first framework as well. Plan to start with EndeavourOS.

Came to see if there was any news, but looks like we’ll just have to be patient. I see it says Batch 2 is now sold out so hopefully we’ll be soon if Batch 3 is in Sept.

The 13gen Intel started shipping 61 Whr batteries with the better processors and that continues with the AMD. All previous ones were 55 Whr. With the new Intel and the AMDs with the new screens, it’s 61 Whr for all versions.

Hopefully we will get the preparation email end of this week. It seems the Batch1 AMD has started shipping and I think i saw some Core Ultra Batch1 laptops already starting to ship.

So maybe preparation email end of this week and shipping starting next week

:crossed_fingers:

We haven’t started shipping the Intel mainboard ones but we started shipping the first batch for AMD. batch 2 should be next!!

Wait a minute… 2 comes after 1?? (Just kidding)

Thought i saw someone on reddit saying intel would have shipped but I remembered wrong then.

I know, it’s hard to believe but yes  you are not going to believe what comes after 2.

We have batches for several preorders (laptops with AMD mainboard, laptops with intel mainboard, intel mainboards, displays…) it’s completely understandable to get confused.

I bought mine 2 months ago tomorrow. Super excited!!! My old Dell XPS13 is on its last legs. I can’t wait to be on a AMD CPU. I’m starting to check my order status daily in anticipation of progress.

I can’t wait to see how the 2.8k looks IRL. A friend of mine has the older display and its nice but getting that near 4k wtih 2x scaling is going to be a big step up.

You forgot the word: “week” at the end of your sentence.
sigh One can hope…
