This is a bios update
Hey there, I got tired of battery drain while playing games (Risk of rain 2 is the main culprit here), and wanted to buy a 240w charger, so I ended up buying the Ugreen 500w Nexode charger, which has a single port max of 240w (yes I plugged it into the right port). It also supports PD 3.1, which is what the framework 16 uses IIRC. When gaming, I found that there was constant jittering, as if I was watching a slideshow while also somehow getting 120 fps if that makes sense. Ive done a bunch of digging, and heard this might be a bios issue? I just want confirmation of this, and would like to know if theres anything i can do to remedy the issue, because I spent $200+ usd on this charger, and I dont want to go through the process of returning it. Ive been able to fix all of the other issues with the laptop on my own, but this one is driving me insane and im out of the 30 day return window for the 16. Please help!

Needs new EC firmware, that FW release when they do a BIOS release.
I have written some EC firmware fixes that you could try if you are adventurous. They do fix the stuttering during gaming.

Thank you! Will these fixes work on windows or are they linux specific? Ive seen a few changes but have noticed people saying that they dont work on windows.
These are the fixes that will come with BIOS 3.06 as indicated on the web page for your link. This version is not yet available. The latest available is 3.05.

Can confirm that bios upgrade worked, and I’m seeing much more stable fps now with the 7700s and a 240w charger connected!
No more battery drain as well - tested for roughly an hour playing ff7remake and didn’t see the battery percentage drop after the session

Can’t figure out the Linux specific link though, but most just get that through fwupdmgr anyway. I’m sure it will be up there when they are ready.

Edit: I ordered a 250w psu a while ago but has been on back order for quite some time. I recently cancelled it as I have dropped the dGPU and gone the eGPU route and should no longer need it as the eGPU has it’s own supply. But I sure hope it works well for everyone that will be using the dGPU w/ the 240w! Cheers.

Linux if you want to go fast, you can extract the .cap file from the ZIP and run:
fwupdmgr get-devices | grep 'System Firmware' -F -A1
Note down the “Device ID”, make sure your laptop is plugged into power, then run:
sudo fwupdtool install-blob Framework_Laptop_16_Ryzen7040_capsule_signed_allsku_3.06.cap DEVICE_ID
(replacing DEVICE_ID with the ID from above)
Does it solve battery drain in Balanced mode as well?
I’m on stock firmware, Windows 11 Pro, Ectools + Libre Hardware Monitoring. Did some testing, you actually can switch from one to another, but problems arise when unplugging the charger mid-load regardless the charge mode selected. Sometimes it gets stuck in “Power Saving” mode (30W dGPU) eventi with High Performance selected…

yes, it solves battery drain issue in balanced mode - at least according to release notes Framework Laptop 16 Ryzen 7040 BIOS 3.06 Release BETA

Did some testing with Delta 240W.
Works wonders for now. No battery drain, very good performance. (>2000pts in Steel Nomad)
After playing palworld for about six hours with a 240W charger, I only drained about 3% while in performance mode. That’s a significant improvement over how it was previously. I did have to reduce my GPU wattage from 120W back to 100W, otherwise it reintroduces frame pacing issues.
it looks like it automatically set the laptop to idle mode as well, upon checking the charge control. It’s holding it steady at 77% (down from 80%) after closing the game. I have battery saver enabled as well with the new update.
