A more ethical Framework competitor?

Love it and champion it. But it is a two way street my friend.

That’s right, you can have your opinion so do others.

Most users don’t have specialized tools to solder RAM chips. Either make them socketed, or make the RAM upgrades the same price (or cheaper because soldered RAM has lower manufacturing cost) as buying RAM separately

The CPU itself is not under some sort of NDA?

Aside from above, I’m really looking forward to MNT laptops. Swappable battery the next effing level. Not only you can replace the battery, the battery replacement is also individual cells, and the battery management system (BMS) won’t “suicide” which is a huge plus.

MNT Reform is not manufacturing the AIO boards. They are modifying them, but to modify a bananapi to have socketed ram seems like a fools errand. perhaps we know different things though.

I do not think we have printers at this level yet

yes i am very happy with mine in terms of flexibility like this. my only issue is the pocket is slightly cramped when typing. this seems like a silly complaint for a pocket computer, but it does make it a bit more difficult to use. im considering developing a board to replace the keyboard with a one handed layout instead with chords.

On second thought, If people can find a reputable repair shop, I would actually recommend buying Apple MacBooks.

Oof, that’s a take…

The company which lobbies against right to repair, makes its products deliberately hard to repair for third parties and owners, never owns up to its mistakes and is (or definitely was) hostile to open-source software in iOS app-store is the one to prefer over Framework?

Yes, you’re right, this take is problematic.

This is an absolute nothing burger.

It is not Framework’s job, mission, etc to be morality police.

There are gobs of strong personalities in the open source world. Linus Torvalds himself writes in what I would consider a “toxic” manner often. Look at the exchanges between him and Kent Overstreet for example. Should we also blackball Linus and shun his three decades of amazing dedication to FOSS?

If you personally don’t want to participate in Hyprland, omarchy, whatever, that’s your choice. If you want to ignore the opinions of particular people, or rebut them, go for it. But Framework has made the correct choice, in my opinion, to not get bogged down in this morality he said she said quagmire.

The US and the world have way way way worse people and issues to be focusing on than this.

If you look for more “ethical” laptop for that reason, you won´t find many models, all main manufacturers have their “skeletons in the closet.” IMHO, this search will be pointless - even if you take your laptop apart, you will be never sure which horrible thing you will indirectly support. Does it even matter ? Accept that your laptop is a bit “evil” and do good things with it. Alternatively, I think best thing to do for you, is to get a refurbished second hand laptop, even from the ethically “horrible” manufacturers. At least you will spare the environment.

Closest to that I know is NovaCustom. Others - not so much, at best there are some who share schematics. Edit: I think Framework is still the best in that category.

People will vote with their wallet and some people already did in other thread. No matter what, framework’s action is already angered portion of community, that’s see what happen although I’m not really optimistic if framework keep their sponsors on DHH.

Considering they’re all made in China and China has been engaging in ethnic cleansing every year since the great leap forward, nothing from Apple counts as ethically sourced.

That’s honestly at the heart of all of this though. Maybe I’m more aware of the reality of China because of where I am but the biggest issue is that simply everything relies on Chinese suppliers for one thing or another. Considering China’s human rights track record and current, ongoing atrocities everything else pales in comparison.

Unless you are advocating for China-free supply chains, you are not advocating for ethically sourced products.

I guess Vaio is Japanese made laptop with china free supply chain? Last time I check `lspci`, the recognisable components are either made in Taiwan or Japan.

It’s a lot more ethical than promoting DHH, that’s for sure.

There really isn’t any hardware company making computers, that overall is more ethical than Framework.

If on the other hand, you are of the opinion that Framework is unethical, you can’t really touch any of the following:

  • Apple
  • Lenovo
  • Intel
  • AMD
  • Microsoft
  • Google
  • Many others

And of course anything that depends on them, and thus puts money in their pockets.

Your best hope is recycling from the scrape yard, and doing everything yourself.

Is this a projection?

There are three brands I have experience with that I feel comfortable recommending. Neither are as polished as Framework, but they hold a special place in my heard nevertheless.

  • Starlabs - I have their Starlite and despite being rough around the edges, I am impressed with its quality.
  • System76 - I have their Galago Pro 5, and while it is a cheap Clevo rebrand, the community and distro surrounding it rock, hears hoping for an in house System76 laptop in the near future!
  • Pine64 - I have their Pinephone, and you absolutely have to be a gig-nerd to use their stuff and be willing to be the wizard, but its surprisingly really good.

Purism as well makes what looks to be excellent, if expensive, hardware. I have no experience with them, but I would certainly love to get my hands on some of their devices.

EDIT: Of the three I recommended above, Starlabs offers OEM parts on most of their devices and Pine64 all of their devices. Not sure about Purism and System76s are generally easy to get into with guides online, but they don’t have replacement parts.

MNT Reform is looking really cool to me. I don’t mind the chonk, and I like that it’s truly open hardware and software and built by queer folk. The trackball and mechanical keyboard look great. Now that it has the faster rk3588 it’s something that I could use daily. Wish it had a longer battery life but nothing’s perfect. Likely my next PC.

You honestly can’t be serious about considering Apple more ethical than Framework. I mean, in all honesty, come on!

Or are you just trolling around?
