A tool to help choose upgrade paths

Hi !

I’m currently rocking a Framework Laptop 13 with an i5 1240P and I’m thinking about upgrading my mainboard to a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (what a name).

The thing is, after checking cpu specifications on both, looking for reviews on internet and checking shady benchmark lists, I find it pretty hard to make an informed choice and see the clear benefits or not of the upgrade.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, the AI 9 HX 370 looks obviously better on paper than the modest i5 1240P I have, but I would love framework to provide a reference sheet, where I can find how much of an upgrade it is compared to my old config, or a tool that tells you “This upgrade will give you +x% performance” at least. How long does the same battery lasts with this cpu, is it noisier, warmer, etc…

Products details on Framework website are too shy of details in any way in my opinion.

Do you guys know how I could check the benefit of this upgrade and whether or not it is a good upgrade ?

Love the team, love the product,

Cheers,

Louis.

This is a way to complex topic to handle in a data sheet. You will have to check and compare reviews and see if someone benchmarked your use case.

Aside from the complexity that you’re asking for… what are you looking to do that “necessitates” the upgrade?

Gaming, Local LLMs, Schoolwork, programming, etc…?

I ask this, as it will help substantially to know what workload you are looking to “make better” if it is gaming, I’d look for relative scores based on the iGPU/APU which you’ll more than likely find in handheld reviews. Other workloads, may not be so easy to come across.

I personally made the jump from the 11th Gen intel i7 to the R5 7640U, but that was because I was looking at doing a bit more traveling, and wanted a bump in gaming performance and it delivered. But otherwise, my 11th gen i7 was meeting all of my other needs, and would have saved me some coin.

I expect that the AI boards would do better than what I can currently pull, but at the moment, it is meeting all of my needs.

Thanks for you response ! It’s for better gaming performance, but also more performance in general for compiling code, better efficiency etc. I think I’ll do the update, thanks !
