Hi, I’d like an advice from the NixOS users here.
I want to buy a Framework 13 and I’m debating between the AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 or Intel Ultra 5 processors. Of course I looked at the benchmark online, but I’m interested in what processor would be the best choice for NixOS (Hyprland) compatibility (this is for light coding and browsing, for heavier workloads I ssh in my desktop). I would attribute points to suspension working properly, better thermals, and less random bugs. Also, is there a practical difference in the integrated gpus? But I’m interested in advices all around.
How about a 7640U instead? The AI340 is pretty much entirely worse (it does have a stronger NPU and zen5 cores are disproportionately good at certain loads but that’s about it) and it and being a generation older it has a lot more of the linux kinks worked out already.
Thanks for the tip @Adrian_Joachim! I had considered that, but the only version in the store with the 7640U is the one with the large 2880x1920 screen and I was worried about having to do fractional scaling everywhere (will it work with wine, for example?). Are my worries unfounded here?
I don’t use fractional scaling and everyone eyes are different so can^t really tell you. With the 2.2k screen I am quite comfortable running 100% scaling. The 2.8k one may indeed be ever so slightly too small to run 100% for me too.
Weird they don’t offer the 7640U with the 2.2k display when they do offer the ryzen ai models wit it.
They do offer it it just sells out really quickly. A friend managed to grab one (7640U, 2256x1504 screen) this month. When he came back to buy another a few days later, it was gone.
Just received it today, and it had a 10/2025 manufacture date. That’s how quickly they sell (and/or how little they produce)
It is a pretty good deal, especially compared to the somewhat underwhelming lower end AI 300 options (the 370 is cool but also turbo expensive).
