To dampen expectation, depending on what your OS choice is i would like that thoroughly test a device at least for a week before trusting it on any kind of trip lasting longer than a day.
I am a bit pessimistic here because i am ardently following all the linux threads and there seems a whole list of stuff that has to be checked and fine tuned as sleep, battery handling, driver issues and so on. I am sure all that will be ironed out eventually, but especially the firmware stuff seems to leave some things to be desired.
There is also the hardware side, threads here are a bad measurement as the unknown element might be huge and maybe the people that do complain are the only ones among thousands that actually have problems. I also considering swapping the cooling paste but then i know nothing how to procure this fabled PTM7950 stuff, and even if then i wonder if it really worth it.
I plan on doing the PTM7950 but I will wait a couple months before doing it. The original thermal paste will be at its best at first and Iāll get time to judge if itās needed or not.
The PTM7950 doesnāt seem hard to get, the results from the Aliexpress 0.2mm thick one are very close from the original 0.25mm.
Based on the conversation above about prices, I looked at what components are going for at my local Microcenter, and indeed I can save at least $65 by bringing my own storage and RAM. Iāll get over the compatibility worries (Iām used to the desktop world where anything with a SATA port is fair game!)
So I just changed my order with Framework, thankfully Iām still in the illustrious Batch 7. I think Iāll wait until Black Friday and see what kinds of sales pop up on SSDs and RAM!
Iām going R5 and Iāll be using it for Fusion360 and/or similar workloads. In my experience, I havenāt ever run out of cores on my desktop (R5 3600) unless Iām compiling or running a heavy vm. Super excited :))))
I got so addicted to the anticipation that when Batch 2 started shipping, I ordered a Batch 9 too. But now they have Batch 10, with a Q4 delivery. Iāll have to find something else to wait for.
