I’ve been researching the Framework Laptop 13 Pro and have a couple of questions.
How does the AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 compare to the Intel Core Ultra X7 358H in real-world power draw? Specifically curious about idle and light/medium load (web browsing, music, development, …).
One thing pulling me toward AMD is that their driver is fully open source and built directly into the mainline Linux kernel.
The 13 Pro’s Intel configurations use LPCAMM2 LPDDR5X while the AMD option sticks with SO-DIMM DDR5. Is the LPCAMM2 + Intel combination a strong enough reason to go Intel over AMD? I’m also thinking about future upgrades — is it better to get LPCAMM2 now, or should I wait since it’s new and AMD support might come later?
I expect the pantherlake to do significantly better especially in light to medium load, at higher loads it’ll probably be less of a difference (but still heavily in favor of patherlake).
So is intel, nvidia is the one with the proprietary driver. Hell intel had open source linux drivers before amd.
The AI 300 series used in the fw13 are a refinement of a platform that was revolutionary like 2 generations ago, pantherlake is revolutionary now.
The price of lpcamm is pretty much the only reason I see for going with amd over intel for a new build currently.
I saw that Lenovo is selling their LPCAMM2 RAM, less costly (link) than on the Framework store. However, the RAM is rated at 8533 MT/s (like the one on the Framework store), but the Framework one will run at 7467 MT/s with an Intel CPU. Does the downgrade come from Framework, or is it just an automatic thing from the hardware?
I few years ago a Framework guy mentioned that they had fewer support issues with Intel machines than AMD. I’d be very interested in hearing if that’s still true because for me being trouble free is more important than minor differences in performance or power consumption.
Since we don’t get any concrete sales information we can’t know for sure but given the batch sizes it is quite possible they sold quite a bit more of the amd models which would naturally cause more support issues.
In that case buying the latest stuff may not be your thing, I can pretty much guarantee panther-lake will have more issues initially than the already pretty ironed out amd (or 12th/13th gen intel) boards.
