Anker Prime 67W vs. Anker 735: Fixing the "Power Handshake" Flicker

I’ve been testing the newer Anker Prime 67W against the older Anker 735 (Nano II) to see if it finally solves the Power Delivery (PD) negotiation issues we’ve been seeing on the Framework 13. If you’ve ever had your screen flicker or seen a “Slow Charger” warning when plugging in your phone, here’s what I found.

The Main Difference: GaN II vs. GaNPrime

The 735 uses older GaN II tech, while the Prime 67W uses the newer GaNPrime architecture. In real-world use with a laptop, the difference is massive:

  • The “Reset” Issue: On the 735, plugging a phone into the second port causes a 1–2 second power cut to the laptop while it recalculates the math. On the Prime 67W, this “blink” is significantly faster and often doesn’t trigger the “Slow Charger” notification at all.

  • Thermal Management: The Prime 67W features “ActiveShield 2.0,” which checks temperatures 3 million times a day. During a 2-hour heavy compile, the Prime 67W stayed about 5°C cooler than the 735.

  • Portability: The Prime 67W is roughly 50% smaller than the original 65W silicon bricks and features much sturdier foldable prongs than the older 735.

If you already own the 735 and can live with the 2-second disconnect, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. However, if you are buying a new charger today, the Anker Prime 67W is the clear winner for travel. It handles the “handshake” much more gracefully and fits better in a small tech pouch.

Note on BIOS: I’ve tested this on BIOS 3.05 (AMD). If you are on an older Intel 12th gen board, you might still see a brief disconnect because of how the older PD controllers handle VBUS drops.

Has anyone tried the 100W Prime version yet? I’m curious if the extra overhead prevents the laptop from dropping to 45W when a phone is attached.
