Is anyone having this problem where the anodized coating is coming off on the edges of the laptop chasis? I haven’t had this laptop long at all and I’m very gentle with it. This is happening on multiple places on the laptop. If I rub my finger along it I feel some very sharp pains like I’m getting slivers, though I can’t see anything stuck in my finger.
If I remember right, the radius of all edges should be 3x thicker than the thickness of anodized coating, so this is likely a manufacturing defect that could’ve been prevented with a more careful design or fine-tuned control over the coating application.
Any way to “fix" this so it’a smooth again and looks nice?
Thing is, this coating is just paint. Because the underlying metal is magnesium, it cannot be anodized like Aluminum does, so Framewok painted it. My speculation is that magnesium is first coated by a relatively thick coat of primer (dark gray) and then with a pretty thin coat of metallic paint to match the anodized aluminum look so that the aluminum expansion cards don’t look out of place.
The thin outer paint rubs off quite easily then, exposing the primer.
There are ways to paint magnesium so that it’s either more durable or wear doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, I know because I’ve had some surface tablets that I’ve abused pretty heavily, but I guess for Framework this process is somehow inacessible.
