I expected when I saw the single audio jack on the Framework Desktop board that there wouldn’t be any way to do anything aside from a single stereo output out of it. That seems to be incorrect, since in the driver for the audio it has selections for surround audio as well as audio input. This lead me to the motheboard layout, where it says that the jack on the back is actually a 6-position headphone jack. Is there a pinout of this, or a source where we can find the TRRRRS plugs or breakout cables for this?
Sorry, to not answer your question. But that is why i have ordered a front-module with an audio jack. That is more convenient for an audio access as an user, imho.
I totally get your point here as the port on the back/mainboard seems to be not well described.
I actually use an external USB sound card that was passed down from my prior system, but I was thinking it would be nice to have a second line-in that I could plug my other monitor into so my game systems would be mixed into my headphones. I’m not sure if the expansion port audio header would give me a line-in.
According to the description in the framework shop is has headphone out and line-in.
For the internal port, there’s definitely conflicting info on that, the one source I saw other than the drawings in github said just headphone out and microphone in… Mic in wouldn’t be useful for a line in for my purposes.
For the expansion card, it just says “audio input and output” but I’m not sure that means the same time, or if it’s a mic input and audio output at the same time, or if it’s a switchable that can either be a line in or a line out, or if it has some esoteric non-standard plug other than a standard TRRS like a phone would use for a wired headset. You would need 5 pins for stereo line in and stereo line out at the same time. (TRRRS)
Just checked on another framework products schematic (fw13) and there only TRRRS in implemented.
What you see from the mainboard layout published for the framework desktop is a 6-pin package soldered onto the mainboard.
This does not imply to be a Quad-Ring audio connection, that package can internally be or soldered to any number of ring setups (down to only TRS)! I’d assume that it is triple ring connection with standard setup as you described to need/expect.
I’ve been unable to find the same part number’s datasheet anywhere so far, but similar ones with 6 pins have turned out to be mere TRRS, which would match the idea of a Stereo Output with Mic, and the extra two pins are used for sensing if a cable is plugged in.
And, further experimentation, I plugged a cable in, tried all of the different configurations, and all of them said “microphone (unplugged)” on my inputs, so looks like mono mic is the only available configuration.
It’s the same as a standard mobile phone headset TRRS. Stereo output, mono mic input if you use a plug that has the extra mic ring.
