August/Batch2 Delivery thread

I received a similar email this morning, though mine included the words “via International Priority service” since I live in Canada.

@Sean_Stewart I am also in Canada… did not get that text :stuck_out_tongue:

Got it! And the back-ordered expansion card was shipped along with (1TB), so my order is all here.

Booted up great, seemed to install fine. Ubuntu’s default UX is a mess as always, but that’ll get ripped out directly (along with systemd).

Thanks to the framework team, this is really looking like a solid piece of hardware. Also kudos to support & warehouse for figuring out my delay, and effectively communicating a plan, which did then happen exactly as described.

how do you rip systemd out of Ubuntu? do you replace it with Upstart?

Mine just arrived today, and is now charging. Now the tricky part begins, migrating my files to the new laptop is going to take some time and effort.

Just checking back in on day 2 with this thing. Ubuntu’s running great with the tweaks mentioned in the forums - and I gotta say I love the keyboard. It’s very comfortable to type on. The travel is good and the keys are raised more than I would expect.

Thanks @Framework, this laptop is excellent. I’ll be buying more cards when the marketplace opens.

I received my i5 framework last week and I’m really enjoying it so far. I’ve only had small hiccups with the keyboard connection, but that was documented so I resolved it quickly. Running on NixOS 21.05, and it’s working great. My only gripes are the current issues with power draw from the HDMI and MicroSD expansion cards. To get decent battery life, I’ve had to keep them out most of the time. But this is right after launch, it seems like they’ll fix things in subsequent firmware updates. Love it!

gotta say, worth every second of the wait. Now just gotta wait for the marketplace to be added so I can order another type c expansion card.

It has arrived!!! I’ve got my DIY precious!!!

FedEx Canada works like a charm – they initially said on September 7 it will be delivered on September 9 by 8PM, they did it right, my precious was delivered at 1:26 PM on September 9. No signature required, driver has dropped it on my porch.
I will record unboxing and assembling and initial setup, will share it on this forum in a corresponding topic later – maybe it will be helpful to non-techy people.

P.S. Just for the statistics:

  1. Ordered on Jul 28
  2. Got sad message regarding delay on Aug 26
  3. Got “We are preparing …” message on Aug 30
  4. Got “your order is shipping soon” today, Sep 02
  5. Got “Your order is shipped” on Sep 07
  6. Got my precious on Sep 09

Forgot to post, I got mine yesterday as well.

(everything else came in a separate padded envelope)

(this was from a test boot of windows)

Installed Arch, it was easy rather than the nasty bluetooth regression mentioned in the Arch Linux thread (had to downgrade to 5.12). The one thing I would mention: Secure boot was turned on for me by default, and I couldn’t easily see what key was the BIOS key, so I had to spam several until I eventually got into the BIOS. Once turned off, I could easily boot my arch install USB, and from there it was a standard install. I had to do the kernel boot parameter also mentioned in the arch thread, but no problems other than that.

Yay!

Delivery happened 42.5 hours after I got the shipping email.
I have my two under-2-yr-old sons to take care of during the day, so this was as far as I got at nap time, ha.
See y’all over in the Arch Linux thread. Enjoy your new machine!

Guys, it’s simply … awesome! :innocent: I have assembled my DIY precious in 12 minutes, can’t understand why people have so many problems installing antennas to the wifi board. It’s straightforward even for my fat fingers( although, I have experience doing the same multiple times in the past for my Jetson Nano clusters + replacing WiFi board in Lenovo laptop :joy:).
Also, want to say thank you to the guy who has pre-assembled the chassis – the touchpad cable had 2-sided tape already applied between metal and cable. So the main issue of the Batch1 and early Batch2 models is resolved.
Also, I have installed dual boot( Win10 Pro + Ubuntu 21.04) to the NVME drive. Works like a charm( even considering the fact GRUB’s tiny window in the top-left corner looks funny).
Beta Drivers bundle for Windows works like a charm as well. Also, Ubuntu was able to identify my AX210 WiFi card, everything works well beside the slower download speed, comparing to the same test under the Win10 Pro. Updated firmware from the Intel site has improved the Linux WiFi performance, but it’s still 2 times slower than WiFi download speed under Win10. What is funny: ping, upload speed, etc is same under Win10 Pro and Ubuntu systems. It’s only download speed that is slower under Linux.

Overall – really enjoy the experience, built quality and design of the laptop. Thank you Frame.work team!!!

I was thinking about different boot manager. But you know… GRUB is like AK74 – well-known, reliable and simple like Hell with a huge community. All other software, including rEFInd, is a sort of beta or alpha versions. Even considering the fact they usually have fancy UI, comparing to the GRUB’s face from the ~1970.

Thank you, @RandomUser! That was one of the things I’ve checked after installing Win10 Pro. Fortunately, for me all 4 ports work fine. I have 2 Type-A, 2 Type-C and 1 HDMI. I’ve tossed all USB modules multiple times – it works like a charm at any bay. The only extension I haven’t checked yet is my HDMI module. But I believe it should work just fine as well.

Just wanted to chime in about my experience having it over the last week. i7-1185 DIY.

It it absolutely amazing. Fitted out with a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB NVMe and Corsair 16GBx2 = 32GB of RAM at 3200MHz. Got one of the 250GB SSD modules as well just for some backup storage.

I’m running Pop OS 21.04 on it and it runs like a dream. A few things: Getting the fingerprint reader working in Linux took some tinkering around, but got it working after maybe 30 min of messing with it and reading the relevant post on these forums. The battery indicator had me worried at first too, because it was estimating like 3-4hrs of power on a full battery. But after following some of System76 (PopOS creator) suggestions for battery optimization and just letting it discharge, recharge, and calibrate a bit, it’s now showing great battery life.

Other than those very small issues (a lot less than what I often deal with on Windows), everything worked perfectly with Pop OS and this is shaping up to be an amazingly robust, sleek, and enjoyable Linux laptop. If only there was an AMD mainboard.
