Battery draining on Framework 13" with AMD Ryzen 7 (784040) and Fedora

Hey there!

I am running the 13” with AMD (AMD Ryzen 7 7840U) as a side computer. It is basically unusable like that:

  • After being powered off, after about a week, I would just get a black screen and I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to somehow reset or reboot and after about 1-2 minutes, it would boot normally.
  • Or, the battery is just empty. I powered it off with about 55%, and 10 days later, the battery is empty.
  • Suspend is even worse (obviously?), because it drains the battery even faster.

I am at a loss. I cannot bring this Laptop with me on trips, because I know I cannot just open it up and get work done. Every single time, I have to jump through hoops to get it powered on again.

Am I the only one? Is it a Linux issue? I was thinking of getting the 120Hz screen, but with these issues, I might just want to sell it :frowning:

Linux doesn’t put all devices into the right state at S5 and hardware will consume more battery than it should at S5. I have a patch series that should improve this, but there is a lot of push back on it right now.

But to see if it would help you - could you try putting the machine into S4 instead? That will put all devices into the right state when turning off.

Please elaborate? Or at least link the patch set so I can read what’s wrong.

What’s behind the pushback?

Risk of regression.
