I’m trying to update the BIOS of my Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040) from 3.18 to 3.20 with the EFI shell update. But the update process seems to have stalled. What I see is a black screen and a progress bar with 2 dots and then the Framework logo. The progress bar is not moving for about 3 ho…

Same here - after some back and forth with support I will get a main board replacement. Thank good I am still under warranty …

I followed instructions on the other thread linked by David Henry and reprogrammed my BIOS chip successfully! I made a little guide on Reddit . Hope it helps.

@Richard6 It’s great that you got your laptop working again. Framework should have never released a BIOS that bricks working machines, regardless of the warranty state. Resorting to hardware level hacks to get a laptop working again is just nuts. The vast majority of people would not be able to do…

[image] goldenspinach: Resorting to hardware level hacks to get a laptop working again is just nuts. I don’t disagree, it’s nuts and also: this is the community forum for people willing to do exactly this in order to repair and sustain their devices. I’m tempted to buy a kit and prove I can …

Now my laptop was bricked in the same way everyone else’s. This is the 2nd time the same laptop breaks, I had the bad batch of screens which short circuited itself. It is very disconcerting that Framework keeps pushing this bad BIOS after it has bricked so many of their customers’ systems. Does Fra…

How did you fix it the first time? Did Framework send you a replacement motherboard or did you fix it by yourself? It’s a bit sad to send it to recycling, giving that it’s still working once the BIOS ROM is flashed again.

The first failure was with the screen, and it was fixed by purchasing a screen from a later batch. The 2nd failure is more serious and I will not fix it, but hand back the computer to the IT guys. It seems pointless and actually unethical to give money to Framework for a new motherboard when they c…

Alternatively, a local electronics repair shop might be able to flash the BIOS on the board. It would probably entail getting the parts to do it as they might night have them on hand. Plus a little leg work on your side giving them the right BIOS file to flash and pointing them to a few guides peopl…

It’s not “cheaper” to desolder the flash chip unless you have engineers working without salary. This latest debacle has already cost more than a new laptop in lost productivity. While we can accept occasional hardware issues, the widespread bricking of Framework computers, and Framework’s unwilling…

Related thread with more links: Upgrading to BIOS 3.20 on Ryzen 7040 series may brick your machine TLDR: do not upgrade to BIOS 3.20 unless you want to risk bricking your laptop. Even though Framework encouraged the BIOS 3.20 update, Framework will not replace bricked mainboards that are “out of w…
