Running into an issue where my system hamgs on boot without nomodset, no logs seem to be written.
Seems repeatable whether I boot Ubuntu 24.04 off a flash drive or Debian 12.10.
I did try amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10
to no avail.
- BIOS 3.05
- Debian 12 Bookworm
- kernel 6.12.22+bpo-amd64 and zabbly’s 6.9.9 and 6.14.4
Is your copy of the firmware-amd-graphics package or clone from linux-firmware git repo up to date? I think you’ll get better results with the git versions – my Debian 12 systems show 2023-02-10 as the date while my Debian 13 systems show 2024-12-10 while the git has had substantial updates for amdgpu in 2025-04-19 … and there’s a spate of ‘fails to wake from sleep’ issues raised in this forum which implicate the amdgpu drivers.
And has nomodeset
worked for you in the past? I’m pretty certain that the last 6 years of amdgpu driver development has deprecated nomodeset
because … it’s been solid. (I’ve used it for about 16 years on amdgpu and would expect the best experience using Kernel Mode Setting graphics.)

Yes, I followed the AMD section of the Debian wiki to get the latest GPU firmware.
As mentioned at the start of this, I can only boot with nomodeset.
Pretty sure I just have GPU failure, as my attempts to boot Windows 11 show graphical corruption, and the same SSDs boot without issue in other systems.
