Clarification of Framework 12 "launch" vs "pre-order"

I am very excited for the Framework 12, in fact I am kind of frustrated (not really) that Framework told us about it this early, because I am dreading the wait…! But I have a few questions about the terminology being used, because I am not too familiar with the industry terms.

The blog for the FW 12 says this:

We’ll be sharing much more detail on specifications and pricing as we get closer to the launch of Framework Laptop 12. We’ll open pre-orders in April, with first shipments in mid-2025.

I am excited that we will be able to pre-order in three weeks, but does “pre-ordering” also mean “launching”? I am curious because Framework says that they will be “sharing . . . detail[s] on specifications and pricing as [they] get closer to the launch.”

If pre-ordering is launching, then hopefully we will get incoming news and information about this, which I am excited for. But If it is not, then would we be pre-ordering without having any information about the FW 12?

I ask this question because three weeks is pretty close to “launch” (assuming launching is in fact opening up pre-orders), and I am wondering where the incoming news and information is for the FW 12. The FW 16 had somewhat of a decent and steady release of news and information to keep us excited and to build up further excitement.

Maybe the FW 12 is just not going this route? Or are pre-orders and launches different?

I read it as their main goal is to start taking pre-orders in April and try to get all info out earlier, but have no set date yet. The latest date to release specs could be the same date as pre-orders start with that wording, but I am very confident we’ll get specs and infos earlier.

Edit: Also… “in April” can be end of April too

Welcome to the community! I would imagine the opening of pre-orders would be considered the “launch.” There may be some additional details that will come out between the opening of pre-orders and the beginning of the first shipments, but I’m sure the product page with specs and details will go up when pre-orders start, if not before.

I think what the OP is really wanting to know is when they’re actually going to start shipping.

They said mid year, reckon that means like June/July?

Not really, I just want to know when precisely we will be able to learn more about the FW 12. The FW 16, for example, was first blogged about on Mar 23 2023. There were about six or so more blogs about it until pre-orders were finally opened on Jul 18 2023.

The FW 12 was first blogged about on February. They said that pre-orders would open some time in April and first shipments would come in mid-year, but we have yet to learn anything new about it, compared to the FW 16 having a couple of deep dives blogs. So I’m just confused on when we will actually learn anything about it. The release timeline of the FW 12 is roughly much faster than that of the FW 16 (a two month wait between the FW 12 introduction and pre-order compared to a four month wait for the FW 16), so I find it even more odd why they haven’t released any new information on it.

If anything, I would assume there just isn’t much to say about it? The FW 16 had lots of deep dives because of its hardware, so maybe the FW 12 just isn’t really all that exciting to blog about I guess.

Launch usually means when they will start shipment.
With previous launches and preorder-phases in mind, I think you will get detailed specs when pre order starts (I mean you have to configure it, so specs are necessary).
Blog posts with some in depth information will probably come in the pre order phase before launch, since I can imagine they want to do some more posts about the desktop and the Laptop 13 Ryzen AI, which will launch way sooner.

We can’t start taking pre-orders without announcing the prices  I definitely see why it’s confusing

Yes you can, just say pricing is TBD and still take preorders for $100; some of us will buy one regardless of what the announced price is

It’s a liability and adds extra costs for Framework. There will be a percentage of people who are sensitive to the pricing and when the final price is released, they may cancel their pre-order. However, Framework bears the costs of issuing refunds. It also complicates management of cash flow. Overall, it’s just better for Framework to open pre-orders when they’re ready to do so.

I’m really excited about the 12 and looking forward to the final specs and pre-order start.

I see all kinds of “waiting” pain over the next months. Waiting for specs. Then pre-order start. Actual shipping. Maybe unforeseen delays if parts get scarce, if bulk buyers need to be prioritized, etc.

Still excited about the 12 and will keep standing in line. More of a note to ourselves that it might be better to moderate timeline expectations of when the 12 realistically will be in our hands. Better to ignore all communicated dates and just enjoy each next level as it happens on this quest.

They could at least talk more about how their pen works (pressure levels etc.). I’m worried that this does not happen because there just isn’t much to brag about in a budget device, and/or the FW desktop gets all the attention right now.
