hello everyone,
for almost a month I have been experiencing problems with my Framework laptop 16.
I have been experiencing a serious issue where my CPU usage immediately jumps to 100% when launching certain applications such as Steam or Vesktop. When this happens, the CPU temperature rises very quickly and reaches around 106°C.
When this happens, my performance drops drastically. For example, in games I can go from around 60 FPS down to 2 FPS, which makes them completely unplayable.
At first I thought the issue might be related to my Linux distribution. I was previously using EndeavourOS and suspected it might be a configuration or driver issue. However, I recently switched to CachyOS and the exact same problem still occurs.
This makes my system extremely slow and sometimes almost unusable when running heavier applications.
I use cachy os (kernel : 6.19.7-1-cachyos)
im on hyprland
version of the bios 04.03 (4.3)
Framework Laptop 16, AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS as CPU and AMD Radeon RX 7700S as GPU
If needed, I can provide additional logs or system information.
I didn’t think it was possible to reach 106c without shutting down to protect its self.
First question. If this is an older 16, have you replaced the liquid metal yet? If not, then that is your problem. Replace that first then troubleshoot further.
No, I haven’t replaced the liquid metal yet. I’m going to buy one, but what I find strange is that my PC was working perfectly fine, then suddenly, with paru -Syu, everything broke down.
Yes, definitely! Alternately, if you’re alright with a bit of delay due to the time it takes to exchange comms, you may be able to contact Framework support and request a PTM7958 pad for free.
That’s not too weird! Many things will work until they don’t - failures can be immediate instead of a slow decline. It’s possible that the liquid metal thermal solution was slowly becoming less effective and your hardware temps were steadily increasing while not yet reaching a thermal throttling threshold. It’s also possible that the LM flowed off or away from the top of your CPU and thus introduced a very sudden inability to transfer heat.
No, DO NOT buy that. Sorry for the late reply, but I should have been more clear. Replace the liquid metal with PTM, NOT the same liquid metal. If you buy that you will just need to replace it again down the line with the same problem.
Here is one example of what you should replace it with (It’s the one I used). But there are many out there. You might even be able to get some free from framework if you contact them. Not sure if they are still providing it or not:
So to this point. Steam (at least on Linux) will download updates and compile shaders right when you open it. It is perfectly normal for steam to blast the CPU to max usage for a few seconds to minutes when you open it while it does this.
What is not normal, is for your cpu to go past 100c and overheat.
Okay, so thank you all so much for your help! I was able to fix the problem. My temperature went from 106 degrees when launching Obsidian to a maximum of 50 while playing Forza!
