Elementary OS on Framework 13 Ryzen 7040U – Battery Life + Scaling Issues

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to get Elementary OS (latest release) working smoothly on my Framework Laptop 13 (Ryzen 7040U), but I’m running into some major pain points:

  • Battery life is poor (idle draw ~10–14W even with TLP and CPUFreq).
  • Fractional scaling is missing or ugly, and UI rendering looks jagged.
  • Fonts/rendering don’t match what I’d expect from a native GTK environment.
  • Most tweaks (power-save profile, disabling animations, etc.) have minimal impact.

Has anyone managed to get Elementary usable (visually + power-wise) on this hardware?
Is it just not a good match for the 7040U yet?

Would deeply appreciate any config dumps, kernel flags, firmware advice — anything!

Thanks in advance,
Stephen

Elementary is pretty old base so it is not very good with the amd. Also tlp is not really recommended with amd.

Personal suggestion is to move from elementary to ubuntu or fedora.

It’s probably not the main issue though. TLP while not recommend works reasonably well on a somewhat recent kernel.

Old kernel + new hardware = bad experience

elementary OS 8.0.1 has been out for a month and has the latest Ubuntu LTS HWE kernel. I don’t think the 24.04.x base system is the problem. Pantheon is just slowly opening up to fractional scaling. That probably makes it a bad candidate for my incoming FW12 too =(
