Expansion cards, 250GB and 1TB

Hi people, I have the 16 inch AI 300. Along with it i got two 1TB cards. So I initially thought they would require more power. So I put them at the back part of the laptop. None showed up. so then I moved them to the front and middle. It worked for a moment till I was transferring files to it. Then it disconnected.

So then I thought ok what if they just need to be in the middle. so I switched them out for the middle configuration. Only one is still showing up. I have done all this while powering down in-between changing them.

I thought that if I go to mange devices I would see it there. But the one is only still showing up.

My SSD set up was going to be
Main OS 2TB and other
expansion card 1 work files

expansion card 2 games

could really use some help here. Am I only able to have one at a time in or do they need to be in a different config.

Any help is much appreciated.

Regards Ian

Hi.

I am just another user like you. The FW supplied expansion cards should just work.
I would contact FW support via their web site support form.

This page explains the slot cards and the slot capabilities.
Note particularly the paragraph talking about power.
They are all at 5V. So, 900ma = 4.5W, 1.5A = 7.5W, 3A = 15W.
So, if the USB device needs more than 7.5W, you can only plug one it at a time.
The FW web site does not appear to say how much power the 1TB cards use, so you will need to ask FW support about that.

This is a good tip. Try having only one installed at a time and see if the one works reliably.

I have a 250G card installed almost 99% of the time and it has never flaked out on me. It came from a mystery box even.

Todays test and update. Two of them plugged into the front, one on each side. 3+6 if using the diagram. I was transferring one block of 52gb. It flaked out once and both drives got disconnected. But connected fast enough I was able to continue the transferring. Total time about 6 minutes. So I’m guessing you could be right @jared_kidd Might only be able to have one at a time plugged in. Still all in all I’m happy with that.

Thank you very much for replying and your input.
